Boo the Cockatoo: 2026 Pet of the Year
In an exciting announcement on April 14, 2026, Pet Partners proudly declared Boo, a lively cockatoo from Smithfield, Virginia, as the Pet of the Year. This unique accolade comes after an exhilarating six-week fundraising competition that saw Boo raise an astounding $33,674 to support therapy animal visits across the nation. This remarkable achievement marks a significant milestone, as Boo is the first avian participant to clinch this honor, further emphasizing the vital role diverse species play in providing comfort and support through animal-assisted interventions.
The annual Pet of the Year competition saw participation from 148 pets and over 1,150 supporters throughout the United States. This year, the event showcased a vibrant array of therapy animals, highlighting the profound connections humans can develop with various species. Competitors from 35 states and Canada showcased their beloved pets, with dogs dominating the entries. Among them were 123 dogs, alongside 19 cats, five rabbits, three birds, two equines, and even a llama, all contributing to a spirited contest.
With Amy, Boo's dedicated owner and a registered therapist, leading the charge, their fundraising efforts included large community events at Super Pet Expo and intimate local gatherings like “Brews with Boo.” They utilized the power of social media to amplify their message, rallying a supportive network behind their cause. In a close contest, the second place was secured by Legend, a Rainbow Bridge candidate whose compassionate story raised $21,532, while River, a golden retriever, followed closely with $16,291.
Reflecting on their journey, Amy expressed, “At Birds in the Dog House, through our Prism Bird Program and our work with Pet Partners, we've seen how the human-animal bond can truly heal and transform lives. Boo's journey—from abuse to restoration, including regaining his sight after 10 years of blindness—is a testament to the fact that connection isn't constrained by species.”
The competition, which ran from March 2 to April 13, raised more than $158,000 to benefit the Pet Partners Therapy Animal Program. This initiative is vital in providing love, joy, and healing across various demographics, from veterans and patients to the elderly and children in need. Each pet in the competition represented a beacon of hope and healing.
C. Annie Peters, the president and CEO of Pet Partners, remarked, “Each year, we are inspired by the dedication of our Pet of the Year participants and the communities that support them. Boo's historic win not only reflects an extraordinary commitment to our mission but also highlights the powerful role that a wide range of species can play in bringing comfort and support to people in need.” The organization has been making strides in improving the quality of life for individuals through the positive impact of therapy animals since 1977.
In honor of Boo’s victory, he will be showered with various prizes, including a professional photoshoot and appearances on popular radio shows. Through these platforms, Boo’s story will continue to inspire and spread awareness about the important role therapy animals play in society.
As we celebrate this phenomenal achievement, it reminds us all about the deep connections we can form with animals and the potential they have to bring about positive change. Boo the Cockatoo's journey from an overlooked creature to a symbol of hope illustrates how every pet, no matter their species, can make a monumental impact.
