Mazda Models Earn Top Recommendations for Teen Drivers by IIHS and CR in 2025

Mazda's Recognition for Teen Driver Safety

Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) has announced an impressive feat: nearly every model in their lineup has been recognized in the updated list of recommended new and used vehicles for teenage drivers by both the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and Consumer Reports (CR). This accolade is part of a collaborative effort that began in 2020, aimed at helping families make informed decisions to prioritize safety while staying within budget.

As parents with teenage drivers may understand, these new drivers face significant risks on the road due to their lack of experience. Therefore, selecting the right vehicle becomes crucial for this age group. Jennifer Morrison, Director of Vehicle Safety Strategy at MNAO, states, "The oldest car in your garage may not be the best option for your teenager. However, this updated list offers great news: it includes many affordable and safety-equipped Mazda models. We take pride in having vehicles in nearly all recommended categories."

The Utility of Recommendations

The IIHS and CR provide an essential service by evaluating vehicles and advising families on the best options for younger drivers. For instance, the vehicles featured in the recommendations achieved average or better ratings of three out of five for emergency braking and handling. They also received at least two out of five for user-friendliness of controls and displays, eliminating vehicles with the most confusing and distracting setups. Moreover, all listed vehicles are equipped with electronic stability control as standard equipment, thereby enhancing overall safety.

In terms of collision safety, all recommended used vehicles boast good ratings across five essential IIHS crash tests, including moderate overlap front, side crash, small overlap front on the driver's side, roof strength, and head restraint tests. For 2025, the recommended new vehicles are winners of either the TOP SAFETY PICK or TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards from the IIHS, spotlighting their performance in crash tests that meet the latest and most stringent standards. They are also equipped with good or acceptable standard headlights, seatbelt reminder systems with good ratings, and high-performance automatic emergency braking systems.

Morrison notes, "As a parent of a teenage driver, I feel reassured knowing they are driving a vehicle with top safety ratings and systems like automatic emergency braking and seatbelt reminders. These features are standard in new and used Mazda vehicles and have proven to reduce accidents and mitigate injuries. I am happy to provide this benefit to my teenager and yours."
