Musim Mas Receives Top Rating for Effective Supplier Engagement in Sustainability

Musim Mas' Commitment to Supplier Engagement

Musim Mas, recognized as a prominent integrated oleochemical group, has achieved a remarkable milestone by securing an 'A' rating in the Supplier Engagement Assessment (SEA) conducted by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). This accolade marks the second time the company has been honored since 2024, signifying its ongoing dedication to addressing climate-related challenges within its supply chain.

Understanding the CDP's Supplier Engagement Assessment

The SEA is an extension of CDP’s climate change disclosure framework, providing a detailed evaluation of how companies manage their environmental impact through supplier relationships. Factors contributing to the assessment score include governance strategies, emissions targets, Scope 3 emissions management, and comprehensive risk strategies. Companies that excel in these areas reflect transparency and commitment to tackling value chain emissions.

As nearly 90% of Musim Mas' absolute emissions derive from its supply chain (Scope 3 emissions), the importance of engaging suppliers in climate initiatives cannot be overstated. The group has committed to a net-zero emissions target by 2050 under the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which necessitates a focused approach on climate-related education and emissions management among its suppliers.

Structured Approach to Emission Management

To effectively manage value chain emissions, Musim Mas has adopted a systematic approach. A critical starting point involves thorough mapping of the company’s value chain.

Since 2019, the company embarked on conducting Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) and Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) evaluations for its upstream products. By 2023, these evaluations expanded to include downstream products, enabling the company to identify major emission hotspots effectively and formulate targeted mitigation strategies.

In 2024, Musim Mas enhanced its supply chain communication by integrating greenhouse gas (GHG) data collection into its supplier self-assessment tool. This integration was backed by workshops aimed at aiding suppliers in managing emissions more effectively, thereby reinforcing the group’s strength in value chain engagement.

Significantly, in 2025, Musim Mas disclosed the GHG emissions from land-use change, which represents the largest contributor to its Scope 3 emissions. These collective measures underline a structured and in-depth approach to managing emissions, essential for fulfilling the commitments under the SBTi agreement.

Future Goals and Commitment

Matthias Diemer, Director of Climate Action and Supply Chain Sustainability at Musim Mas, emphasizes the pivotal role suppliers play in the company’s decarbonization journey. The achievement of the SEA rating is a testament to Musim Mas' ambition to expedite decarbonization efforts linked to its Scope 3 emissions. Together with its partners and suppliers, Musim Mas strives to create tangible impacts and foster a resilient business model.

Looking forward, Musim Mas is set on advancing its near and long-term emissions reduction strategies under the SBTi, with continued supplier engagement serving as a cornerstone in the process of curbing value chain emissions.
