With the launch of the "Engage Meal" program in December 2024, designed to aid employees with meal expenses to encourage workplace interactions, valuable insights were gained from a survey conducted a year post-implementation.
Background: The Challenge of Diminishing Workplace Culture
As remote work and flexible schedules became commonplace at Dashboard, a culture of inviting colleagues out for meals had weakened. Notably, the survey revealed that half of the employees felt uncomfortable inviting coworkers to lunch or dinner. Additionally, the isolation from remote working created a scenario where individual workloads were more pronounced, making it difficult for colleagues to recognize if someone was struggling mentally due to work overload.
The company identified these invisible barriers threatening team cohesion and established the Engage Meal initiative to encourage shared meals as a means of rebuilding organizational strength.
The Engage Meal Program: A Synopsis

The results post-implementation demonstrated that the Engage Meal significantly served as a catalyst for socializing among staff. Notably, 100% of the participants reported regularly using the benefits of the program, revealing that they engaged in conversations with colleagues they usually do not interact with, indicating a notable decrease in social interaction hurdles.
An employee expressed, "Thanks to Engage Meal, I've been able to enjoy meals privately with coworkers I would not have typically reached out to."
Enhancing Work Dynamics through Improved Understanding
Moreover, valuable stories emerged, showcasing how increased familiarity through meals translated into better work collaboration. Employees found it easier to communicate their requests based on a clearer understanding of their peers' personalities, fostering a more efficient collaborative environment.
"I realized it's easier to brief someone based on knowing their values; I can now tailor my communication accordingly," noted another employee.
Current Challenges: Communication Limitations
However, the survey highlighted areas requiring attention beyond casual dining. A significant number of employees still found it challenging to discuss work-related issues with colleagues, indicating that fellowship alone could not overcome this hurdle. Moreover, the routine of dining together every three months began to feel more like a scheduled event, rather than fostering organic communication.
Furthermore, only half of the respondents felt an increased sense of belonging to the team, necessitating enhancements to reinforce this aspect.
Future Directions
In light of these findings, Dashboard plans to adapt the Engage Meal program, aiming to promote more habitual interactions among employees.
