32nd Annual Zenyu-seki Gravestone Contest Highlights

In a touching ceremony, the results of the "32nd Annual Zenyu-seki Gravestone Contest" were announced, showcasing remarkable gravestones filled with deep personal stories. The grand prize was awarded to Yasushi Yajima from Chikuma City, Nagano Prefecture, who commemorated his son who tragically passed away in a cycling accident. The gravestone features a beautiful engraving of a photograph that captures his son riding his beloved bike, symbolizing his spirit soaring through the sky.

Yajima chose this unique design, showcasing his son in a playful pose that has become popular among cycling enthusiasts, evoking a sense of freedom and joy. The image is carved in such a way that it resembles the son gleefully cycling through the clouds above. This heartfelt tribute not only memorializes Yajima’s son but also conveys a loving message: "You can come back home anytime, we’ll always be waiting for you, your dad and mom."

The contest, organized by the Zenyu-seki Association, aims to promote the beautiful craft of gravestone making while allowing families to express their love and remembrance for lost ones. This year marks the 32nd iteration of the contest, which has garnered entries from various regions, showcasing a wide range of creative and personalized gravestones.

The evaluation criteria extend beyond the aesthetic appeal of the gravestone; the heartfelt emotions and stories surrounding the memorial play a vital role in the judging process. Entrants were required to submit photographs along with stories about their loved ones, creating a tapestry of narratives that highlight the significance of memorialization in family traditions.

A total of 25 entries were submitted before the May deadline. After careful deliberation, winners were selected, including one grand prize, two special awards, and eight honorable mentions.

Special Award Winners

Among the special awards, Masami Mori from Iga City, Mie Prefecture, secured recognition with a gravestone designed for his father, a craftsman who had a traditional and classic style, but surprised his son with a request for a contemporary design. Together with a stone shop, Mori created a modern gravestone that harmonizes with the local temple graveyard, showcasing impressive craftsmanship that brought tears to his father's eyes. This experience revealed the innovative spirit within his father that Mori had never fully appreciated until then.

Another special award was presented to Shuji Takahashi from Fukagawa City, Hokkaido, who honored his father, a lover of dump trucks, with a uniquely themed gravestone that captures his father's passion for vehicles. The grave includes stone replicas of a dump truck, wheel loader, and even a helicopter, celebrating his father's hardworking spirit and the joyful memories they shared.

Honorable Mentions

Among the eight honorable mentions, Takayuki Koyama from Kani City, Gifu Prefecture, created a gravestone designed to be welcoming for family members, transcending traditional family lineage constraints. His idea was to provide a resting place that signifies unity for future generations, paralleling his hopes for his daughter and her family.

In another poignant story, Koji Tsukui from Kanra County, Gunma Prefecture, crafted a handmade gravestone for his late wife, reflecting her love for gardening through vibrant plant arrangements and a design reminiscent of their home garden, perfectly capturing her essence in stone.

Moreover, Hiroaki Shimoyama from Okayama used locally sourced stone to create a dialogue space in his gravestone installation, aiming for a place where visitors can commune with their history. Meanwhile, Tomihisa Miyazawa from Annaka City strived to create a unified family resting spot, entwining his parents’ and siblings’ stories in a single memorial dedicated to togetherness.

Lastly, Shoko Narita from Tochigi City celebrated her husband’s passion for golf with a creatively themed gravestone, complete with elements simulating a golf course. Similarly, Takehiko Hosaka from Hokuto City designed a gravestone inspired by his father’s carpentry skills, signifying a legacy of creativity.

In a world where discussions about abandoning family graves are becoming increasingly common, the rich stories behind these graves remind us of the enduring bonds that exist within families, demonstrating the importance of remembrance and thoughtful memorial creation.
