Marc Chagall Exhibition Commemorating 40 Years Since His Passing

Marc Chagall Exhibition: A Tribute to a Master

The upcoming exhibition at ギャルリーためなが in 南青山, Tokyo, promises to be a significant event for art lovers and admirers of the renowned painter Marc Chagall. Running from November 8 to December 7, 2025, this exhibition commemorates the 40th anniversary of Chagall's passing, showcasing around 30 of his captivating works. This is a unique opportunity to dive into the rich tapestry of his artistic legacy.

Marc Chagall was born in 1887 in Vitebsk, a part of the Russian Empire, later known as Belarus. As the eldest son in a Jewish family, he was immersed in religious and folk cultures from an early age. This deep engagement shaped his sensitivity toward mysticism and symbolism, two essential elements in his artwork. After studying art in St. Petersburg, he journeyed to Paris in 1910, where he mingled with luminaries like Picasso and Matisse. Despite being part of an avant-garde scene, Chagall clung to his Jewish identity, which profoundly influenced his distinctive style.

During World War II, Chagall escaped the Nazi regime by fleeing to America. The turbulence of history didn't deter him; after the war, he settled in the south of France and expanded his artistic repertoire beyond painting to include stained glass, theatre sets, and ceramics. His work consistently featured unique motifs such as lovers soaring through the sky, nostalgic landscapes, Jewish folklore, animals, and musicians—elements woven from a blend of memory and imagination.

Chagall earned the title “the magician of color,” and indeed, his vibrant palette captures mystery, dreams, longing, hope, and love, invoking a poetic resonance that continues to captivate audiences. This upcoming exhibition will particularly highlight his works themed around bouquets, which symbolize a multitude of meanings for Chagall: love, happiness, memory, and life itself. The theme of bouquets frequently appeared throughout his life, representing significant milestones such as his meeting and marrying his beloved wife, Bella, the birth of their child, fond reminiscences of Vitebsk, and a tribute to Bella after her passing.

ギャルリーためなが has previously exhibited many of Chagall's works, but the chance to display over 30 pieces collectively is a rare and exciting occasion. Witnessing such a comprehensive selection of Chagall's art is a delight for the gallery and offers visitors a unique glimpse into his fantastical world and his lyrical use of color.
