Examining Historical Dramas and Kyoto's Influence
The
Kyoto Newspaper Company is set to host the fourth session of its lecture series in Tokyo, titled
Kyoto Newspaper Lectures in Tokyo, designed specifically for fans of Kyoto residing in the metropolitan area. The lecture will take place on
September 8th, 2025, from
6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at the Kyoto University Tokyo Office meeting room on the
10th floor of the Shin Marunouchi Building.
In this session, we will welcome
Tomoyuki Miyakawa, President of
Nihon Eiga Hoso, as our guest speaker. An accomplished producer, Miyakawa has been at the forefront of Japan's film and television industry, handling numerous films and dramas, including the well-known
Onihei Hankacho. His talk will delve into the current landscape of historical dramas, particularly focusing on their significance in Kyoto, a city renowned for its rich cultural heritage.
This series of lectures is hosted in collaboration with the
Kyoto Academia Forum, an association of eight universities in Kyoto. Participants will have the unique opportunity to gain insights that cannot easily be found elsewhere.

About the Speaker
Born in 1967 and raised in Tokyo, Tomoyuki Miyakawa has been influential in the realm of Japanese cinema since his involvement in the launch of the
Japan Movie Channel and
Jidaigeki Channel in 1998. Over the years, he has conceptualized and produced over
35 original historical dramas for the Jidaigeki Channel, solidifying his reputation as a significant figure in this genre. His prominent works include films like
The Last Loyal Retainers,
LIAR GAME The Final Stage, and
The Bride of Rip Van Winkle, among others. Miyakawa is also the executive producer of series featuring
Onihei Hankacho, showcasing his noteworthy contributions to the industry.
In 2025, Miyakawa is also expected to take the spotlight at the
Itami Juzo 4K Film Festival and the action historical drama
SHOGUN'S NINJA.
