Unlocking Dreams with Barrier-Free Travel
Introduction
The world can often feel inaccessible to those with mobility challenges, but HELPUSH is on a mission to change that. Based in Shinagawa, Tokyo, HELPUSH is dedicated to creating barrier-free travel plans that cater specifically to wheelchair users and those who may have concerns about going out. On April 1st, the company is participating in the April Dream initiative, showcasing a vision of possibilities for everyone.
Understanding the Challenges
It's essential to recognize the backdrop that leads many with disabilities and the elderly to abandon their dreams of exploring the world outside their homes. The team at HELPUSH leverages personal experience and research to address three core societal issues:
1.
Information Barrier: Many are unaware of wheelchair-accessible locations, making planning difficult.
2.
Physical Barrier: Uneven surfaces, steep slopes, and narrow pathways often create insurmountable obstacles.
3.
Psychological Barrier: Feelings of anxiety about asking for help or fear of judgment can trap individuals indoors.
Research indicates that elderly individuals who don’t go out at least once a week face a doubled mortality rate after six years, underscoring the urgency in addressing these barriers.
Inspiration Behind HELPUSH's Mission
Yusuke Terada, the CEO and founder of HELPUSH, has personal experience with mobility challenges due to cerebral palsy. His early life was filled with vibrant experiences, including sports, studying abroad, and engaging in various careers. However, his move to Nagano after starting a family presented a daunting new reality when he could no longer drive.
Suddenly, the simple act of going outside became fraught with challenges. He faced the harsh reality of the three societal barriers and found himself isolated. Fortunately, through the Shinshu Universal Tourism initiative, he was able to rediscover the joy of going out, leading to the realization that the right support and accessible routes could erase his fears of going out.
This epiphany inspired Terada to create a comprehensive supportive travel plan utilizing dedicated buddies—supporters who accompany individuals on their outings for a seamless experience.
Development of Barrier-Free Travel Plans
HELPUSH’s approach involves actively consulting with wheelchair users to understand their desired destinations. Collaborations with local tourist associations lead to tentative travel plans tailored to ensure a smooth travel experience. This involves thorough pre-travel checks to identify paths, routes, and potential obstacles, allowing individuals to focus on enjoyment rather than worry.
Attention to detail is crucial; checking for accessible restrooms and confirming the usability of paths is mandatory. Many potential hazards are invisible until physically explored, which is why HELPUSH emphasizes proactive research.
Empowering the Community
Through the development and implementation of these barrier-free travel plans, HELPUSH aims to tackle the three identified societal challenges head-on. A dedicated buddy doesn't just accompany individuals on their trips; they also participate in the scouting process, ensuring they are well-prepared to assist on the day of the outing.
By involving local businesses and communities, there's a push to foster an environment where individuals feel welcomed and unafraid to seek help.
A Vision for the Future
HELPUSH is still in its early stage, with Terada personally leading the preliminary research. However, the vision is to empower wheelchair users who have experienced these outings to take on roles as researchers for future trips. Recently, a young girl, a wheelchair user, participated in a pre-research activity, sharing her excitement about helping others experience the joy of going out.
The company's long-term goals include creating job opportunities in the accessibility sector that allow wheelchair users to flourish professionally.
