Exploring Beauty Between Home and Art: Upcoming Exhibition in Karuizawa

Exploring Beauty Between Home and Art

The Whitesone Corporation, headed by CEO Yoko Shiraishi in Chuo-ku, Tokyo, has announced a collaborative exhibition titled "The Shape of Home and Beauty," featuring work from master carpenter and artist Shohei Hishida. This exclusive event will take place from July 15 to July 25, 2025, at the private residence known as Belgium Private Home, located in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture.

Exhibition Concept

The exhibition challenges the conventional boundaries between spaces and artworks. Instead of displaying artworks as mere items in a gallery, this approach welcomes four contemporary pieces as essential components of the living space. By inviting these works into a home environment, visitors can confront art in a highly personal setting, which prompts a reassessment of the relationships we hold with artistic expression.

The chosen artworks embody the very essence of living and breathing art: every piece interacts with the space around it. They vary in material and expression, featuring creators such as Katsuyoshi Inokuma, Masayuki Tsubota, Madara Manji, and Kyoko Terakura. Their works will resonate across the airy setting, creating an evolving dialogue influenced by movements, changing light, and ambient temperature—transforming the experience into a dynamic exchange that continuously adapts and shifts.

Artistic Statements and Material Exploration

What is art? Where does beauty truly reside? This exhibition reflects on these questions through the lens of daily life.

Katsuyoshi Inokuma specializes in creating harmonious blue tones, known as "Inokuma Blue"," which have garnered significant recognition both domestically and abroad since his breakthroughs over 40. His unique blending methods expand beyond traditional techniques, crafting ethereal landscapes that showcase a delicately balanced modern aesthetic.

Masayuki Tsubota brings tangible structures alive with vibrant colors and textural contrasts, evoking memories within visitors. His pieces emphasize organic materials that blur boundaries, interweaving stories that engage senses and emotions alike, creating echoes of recollection.

Madara Manji works with an ancient Japanese metal processing technique known as "mokume-gane," creating intricate three-dimensional pieces that embody a seeming contradiction—strength meeting fragility. His work visually contrasts human ambition against universal themes, exposing human nature's delicate essence.

Kyoko Terakura, a rising talent born in 1994, thoughtfully crafts sculptures inspired by the innocence of childhood, exploring themes that resonate deeply with the human experience. The transformation of clay through high-temperature firing signifies a journey to whatever embodies shared hopes and prayers from the viewer.

The Venue

The Belgium Private Home is a newly constructed retreat designed by Shohei Hishida under the theme “Ancient, Beautiful.” It is built utilizing locally sourced materials such as timber, soil, and stone, providing a sense of continuity and organic integration with nature. This exhibition will further enhance its dialogue with contemporary art, showcasing a seamless interaction between the built environment and creative expressions.
