Announcement of the Construction Industry Work Style Forum 2026
The 2026 Construction Industry Work Style Forum is officially on the calendar for May 22, 2026. This major event will take place at the Toranomon Hills Forum in Tokyo, with addresses from various sectors, from government and academia to private industry. Organized by Suke Dachi Research Institute, this forum aims to tackle the ongoing and critical labor shortage crisis facing the construction industry in Japan.
Background of the Forum
The construction sector in Japan is grappling with an intensifying labor shortage. The aging workforce of skilled laborers is becoming a pressing issue, as younger generations are reluctant to enter this field. Meanwhile, the demands for maintaining and updating our aging social infrastructure, along with urban redevelopment projects, remain high. Thus, the question arises: how can a limited pool of human resources meet these varied needs?
To address these challenges, the forum will facilitate discussions around recent legislative measures—such as work style reform laws and laws aimed at securing a future workforce. Alongside these efforts, there is a need for innovative solutions to enhance productivity, including construction digital transformation (DX) and inclusion of diverse labor sources including women and foreigners.
In light of these complexities, it's vital that public, private, and academic sectors collaborate to find viable solutions—a goal that the forum has committed to since its inception in 2024.
Recap of the 2025 Forum
The previous event, the Construction Industry Work Style Forum 2025, was held in June 2025 at the Tokyo International Forum, with support from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the Japan Construction Skills Institute, and the Japan Economic Research Institute.
This highly attended event featured 28 experts from various sectors delivering a keynote presentation, two research presentations, and six panel discussions across diverse themes. A new communication area was created where attendees could engage with the latest technologies, products, and each other, featuring seven mini-stages and twelve sponsor booths to encourage networking opportunities.
Attendees ranged from major construction firms to small local contractors and skilled craftsmen, making it a melting pot of ideas and connections.
