atNorth Expands Data Center Infrastructure with New 30MW Facility in Stockholm

atNorth Expands Data Center Infrastructure in Stockholm

atNorth, a leading provider of high-density colocation and custom-built data centers in the Nordic region, has announced plans to establish a new data center in Stockholm, Sweden. This facility, aptly named SWE02, will add 30 megawatts (MW) to the company's already impressive portfolio, bringing the total number of data centers in the Nordics to eleven.

SWE02 will be strategically located near atNorth's initial state-of-the-art Swedish facility, SWE01, which began operations in March 2022. This new data center will incorporate advanced heat reuse technology, allowing excess heat generated to be recuperated and utilized within the surrounding community in partnership with Stockholm Exergi. This initiative not only helps in managing energy expenditure but also aligns perfectly with the goals of a sustainable future.

"We are honored to collaborate with atNorth to repurpose heat to satisfy local energy demands in Stockholm," stated Peter Sivengård, the Business Project Manager at Stockholm Exergi. His perspective underscores the significant role such collaborations play in maximizing resource efficiency and contributing to a sustainable circular economy.

The establishment of SWE02 will streamline operations between atNorth's two campuses, allowing for easy integration and management of customer workloads while enhancing redundancy and resilience. The anticipated operational launch of this facility is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2027.

Karin Wanngård, the Mayor of Stockholm, expressed her excitement regarding atNorth's decision to expand in the Kista area. She remarked, "This new energy-efficient data center campus will significantly contribute to our city’s climate objectives, presenting new job opportunities in our community while establishing Stockholm as a significant hub for digital infrastructure excellence." This sentiment resonates deeply as urban centers increasingly recognize the importance of sustainable development in tech industries.

Moreover, atNorth's growth in Stockholm will also lead to the construction of a new electrical substation by Ellevio, enhancing the resilience of the regional electric network. Nils Rönnbäck, the Director of Connections Industry and Productions at Ellevio, reflected on this development, stating, "atNorth's sustainable data center strategies resonate with the rising demand for responsible data management and emphasize the need for fossil-free operations. We are excited to support the SWE02 campus as it contributes to sustainable IT infrastructure for modern society."

Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson, CEO of atNorth, reiterated the significance of this expansion by highlighting the increasing demand for responsible data center operators. He stated, "As the need for high-performance digital infrastructure intensifies, companies are searching for partners prioritizing energy efficiency and sustainable design—principles that are integral to atNorth's expansion philosophy." This vision is becoming critically important as various industries adapt to changing technological needs while maintaining sustainability as a core commitment.

In addition to the new Stockholm facility, atNorth recently announced activities such as the expansion of two data center campuses in Iceland and securing land for a mega site in Sollefteå, Sweden. They’ve also established a heat reuse agreement with Denmark's prominent waste-to-energy company, Vesforbrænding, aiming to leverage excess heat from its existing DEN01 data center.

atNorth stands as a key player in the Nordic data center landscape, focusing on offering scalable, cost-effective, high-density colocation services while championing sustainability. Their facilities harness renewable energy and endorse circular economy principles, leading the charge towards greener and more resilient infrastructures.

With their headquarters located in Reykjavik, Iceland, and a growing number of data centers across the Nordic countries, atNorth is setting new benchmarks in the industry. Potential clients are encouraged to explore their innovative services tailored to meet the demands of a rapidly digitizing world. To learn more about atNorth's initiatives, visit www.atNorth.com.
