Nurturing Children's Life Skills Through Farming
Agri Media, a company based in Meguro, Tokyo, is launching an exciting short-term program called 'Share Farm Kids,' which will take place this autumn. This initiative invites children aged 4 to 9 to engage in a hands-on experience of growing and eating vegetables. With limited spots for 30 families, the program aims to educate children about food production and foster a love for vegetables.
Background: Bridging the Gap in Food Education
As awareness around food education grows, urban environments often lack opportunities for children to connect with farming and understand how vegetables grow. Previous editions of the program have seen parents expressing a desire to overcome their children's dislike for vegetables. Many have also noted the importance of understanding food production while living in cities, where direct agricultural experiences may seem distant and difficult to access.
Program Highlights
The Share Farm Kids program spans approximately three months and consists of six sessions designed to keep children engaged. It emphasizes learning through the senses and interaction with nature. Not just about harvesting, the program allows children to partake in every step of the process—from sowing seeds to harvesting the crops, thus enhancing their non-cognitive skills such as creativity, emotional expression, and persistence.
Core Activities
- - Vegetable Growing Experience: Children will cultivate crops like potatoes and radishes, observing their growth and documenting changes. This practical involvement nurtures both their awareness and perseverance.
- - Sensory Mini Events: Each session features engaging activities, including vegetable stamping, packing experiences, creating original nameplates, and making miso soup, ensuring children feel close to nature and food.
Program Schedule
- - Duration: From September 6 to November 30, 2025
- - Frequency: Six sessions (Each session lasts about 30 minutes)
- - Target Audience: Children aged 4-9 accompanied by a guardian (mandatory)
