Israel Cancer Research Fund Unveils New $5.35 Million Grants for Innovative Cancer Research
The Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) has recently unveiled its commitment of $5.35 million in grants dedicated to cancer research for the 2026 to 2027 fiscal year. This substantial investment aims to support 38 innovative projects spearheaded by leading scientists in Israel.
These new grants are a testament to ICRF's ongoing support for cancer research, raising its lifetime investment to nearly $109 million since its inception in 1975, which has funded over 3,000 cancer research grants. ICRF's contribution has significantly advanced cancer research and patient care worldwide. In total, with an additional 57 renewing grants, ICRF will facilitate 95 active research grants during the upcoming funding year, amounting to an impressive $5.84 million in collaborative funding.

1. Lucio Frydman, PhD, Weizmann Institute of Science: Frydman was awarded a Research Professorship Grant for his project on "Integrated Metabolic and Microstructural MRI for Early Cancer Detection." This project aims to develop non-intrusive methods for the early identification of cancer using sophisticated MRI technology, integrating metabolic and structural imaging to highlight high-risk lesions, potentially negating the need for invasive biopsies.
2. Irit Ben Aharon, MD, PhD, Rambam Health Care Campus: This recipient of a Research Professorship Grant is investigating the effects of chemotherapy during pregnancy. Her research focuses on how treatment impacts both mother and fetus, examining various clinical challenges and identifying long-term effects of in utero exposure.
3. Liran Shlush, MD, PhD, Weizmann Institute of Science: With a Project Grant, Shlush is developing a novel single-cell analysis approach for diagnosing acute leukemias through a minimally invasive liquid biopsy technique. This innovative method seeks to decrease the necessity for frequent bone marrow biopsies while ensuring precise analysis and diagnosis.
4. Asael Roichman, PhD, Bar Ilan University: Awarded a Career Development Award, Roichman is researching the interactions between diet, microbiome, and cancer drug efficacy. His findings aim to contribute to personalized treatment plans that account for individual patient responses to therapy.
