American Parkinson Disease Association Unveils PSA to Kick Off Awareness Month in April

APDA Launches "Do What You Love" Campaign for Parkinson's Awareness Month

In a move designed to raise awareness for Parkinson’s Disease, the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) has unveiled a new public service announcement (PSA) that emphasizes the resilience and hope of individuals living with the condition. Kicking off Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month, the PSA is titled "Do What You Love" and aims to encourage those affected by Parkinson's to continue engaging in their passions—even as they face the challenges that come with the disease.

The PSA features personal accounts from eight courageous individuals, each portraying their journey with Parkinson's and how they adapt their lives to maintain joy and purpose. Their stories reflect a mix of passion, determination, and the drive to live a fulfilling life, no matter the obstacles. For instance, Carlos Velez, diagnosed in 2023, showcases his commitment to beekeeping despite experiencing fatigue and physical limitations. Similarly, Regiane Gomes Campos De Oliveira, a dedicated runner diagnosed in 2019, shares her dream of completing the world’s major marathons, highlighting the active and engaged lives many strive for despite Parkinson's.

The initiative aims not only to inspire those living with Parkinson's but also to educate the public on the condition, aiming to dismantle outdated misconceptions about who is affected by it. Through the campaign, APDA hopes to foster a sense of community and solidarity among those impacted by Parkinson's, assuring them that they are not alone.

“Our goal with this campaign is to show that life with Parkinson's can still be meaningful and joyful,” commented Leslie A. Chambers, President and CEO of APDA. “We want everyone to know that there are resources and a supportive community available to help navigate this journey.”

Made possible by collaboration with Havas Lynx New York (creative direction) and Waymack and Crew (production), the PSA has been produced in both English and Spanish, ensuring a wider reach. This represents APDA’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity and support for diverse communities affected by Parkinson's. As the disease continues to impact more individuals each day, it’s vital that conversations around it become more prevalent and supportive.

In addition to launching the PSA, APDA has set up a series of events and programs throughout Parkinson's Awareness Month, encouraging local participation. Activities range from exercise classes to educational programs, all designed to empower and support individuals with Parkinson's and their families. Furthermore, APDA offers a wealth of resources online, including an extensive library of materials available in both Spanish and Mandarin to accommodate the needs of a diverse audience.

Recognizing the importance of community support, APDA works tirelessly to connect individuals with similar experiences, providing important programs that can improve their quality of life. With every new diagnosis of Parkinson’s occurring approximately every six minutes, awareness and funding are critical to further research and develop new treatments.

APDA expresses gratitude to Champion Partners such as Amneal Pharmaceuticals and Sunrise Senior Living for their year-round support, enabling the organization to continue its vital work. Their partnership plays a significant role in helping those affected by Parkinson's Disease have access to resources and opportunities that improve their daily lives.

As we commemorate Parkinson’s Awareness Month, we are reminded of the strength and resilience of those living with the disease. By sharing these inspiring stories, APDA encourages society at large to participate in efforts that foster understanding, compassion, and support for everyone impacted by Parkinson’s.
