BlueWave Welcomes New CEO Sean Finnerty to Lead the Future of Renewable Energy
On May 6, 2025, BlueWave, a prominent player in the solar and energy storage sector in the Northeast United States, announced a major leadership transition. Sean Finnerty, an accomplished executive with over 25 years of experience in the renewable energy industry, has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer, effective May 1, 2025. Finnerty takes over the reins from Trevor Hardy, the Co-Founder and long-time CEO, who has played a crucial role in shaping the company since its inception.
Trevor Hardy's leadership has been pivotal for BlueWave, especially since he became CEO in 2014. Under his guidance, the company has not only witnessed impressive growth but has also expanded its operations into new markets, including agrivoltaics and energy storage solutions. One of the significant milestones during Hardy's tenure was the successful sale of BlueWave to Axium Infrastructure in 2022, which has further bolstered the company’s capacity to innovate and grow.
Finnerty's credentials as a leader in the renewable sector are extensive. He previously served as President of the Renewable Power team at Competitive Power Ventures (CPV), where he spearheaded the development of substantial renewable energy projects, including 2 GW of wind and solar assets. His track record reflects a strong commitment to developing renewable infrastructure and engaging with stakeholders to drive growth.
As he steps into his new role at BlueWave, Finnerty aims to build upon the foundation laid by Hardy, focusing on strategic planning for long-term growth that honors the company's mission. 'As BlueWave continues to transition to long-term asset ownership, Sean's builder mindset and proven leadership will align perfectly with our goals,' said Thierry Vandal, President of Axium Infrastructure U.S. Inc. Finnerty believes that BlueWave is at a crucial point where it can significantly impact the clean energy landscape through innovative projects in agrivoltaics, community solar, and battery storage.
In addition to his noteworthy industry experience, Finnerty holds a Master's degree in Business from Suffolk University and a Bachelor's degree in Resource Economics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He is set to be based at BlueWave's headquarters in Boston, where he will work closely with the Board of Directors and management team to foster a culture of high performance and operational excellence.
Finnerty's enthusiasm for his new role is apparent: 'BlueWave stands at a pivotal juncture as it fortifies its commitment to advancing a resilient clean energy future. I am honored to join a team with a history of leadership and vision in this critical sector, and I look forward to contributing to the company's legacy of innovation and growth.'
With a mission that focuses on transforming access to renewable energy, BlueWave has gained recognition as a certified B Corp and was named 'Best for the World' in Governance by B Labs. Furthermore, it was awarded the title of Member Company of the Year by the Solar Energy Business Association of New England. Amid this transition, the company's dedication to enhancing the accessibility and reliability of renewable energy sources in the U.S. remains steadfast.
As BlueWave embarks on this new chapter of leadership and innovation under Sean Finnerty, the company is poised to continue its vital work in the renewable energy sector and contribute significantly to a sustainable energy future for all. This transition signifies not just a change in leadership, but also a renewed promise to prioritize clean energy solutions as they navigate the challenges ahead.
