I-CAR Launches New Course to Enhance Structural Repair Skills for Technicians
I-CAR Launches New Mixed Attachment Methods Course
Introduction
On October 3, 2025, I-CAR (the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair), a leading organization in automotive collision repair education, announced the introduction of a significant new course: Mixed Attachment Methods. This course is tailored for structural technicians who deal with increasingly complex vehicle repairs, focusing on a range of highly specialized skills.
Course Overview
The Mixed Attachment Methods course aims to enhance technicians' capabilities in various joining techniques that are integral to the repair process. Specifically, it covers essential skills including rivet bonding, MAG welding, MIG brazing, steel sectioning, and spot welding. Each of these methods is a vital component found within Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) collision repair procedures. By consolidating these skills into a single comprehensive program, technicians can demonstrate their proficiency in applying these techniques in practical settings.
Practical Application
During the course, technicians will engage in hands-on training, replicating an OEM repair process to prove their mastery of different attachment methods. This is especially important for repairing vehicles that utilize mixed materials, where structural integrity is paramount for passenger safety. The course significantly reinforces the competencies required for achieving Platinum® level certification.
Commitment to Excellence
I-CAR's CEO, Kyle Thompson, emphasized the organization's dedication to maintaining educational relevance by adapting the curriculum to meet the evolving requirements of the industry. He stated, "This new course demonstrates I-CAR's unwavering commitment to ensuring our technical education stays current with OEM requirements and meets industry needs."
In an effort to simplify the certification process for technicians, the Mixed Attachment Methods course will replace the current Steel Sectioning Recertification requirement for those seeking Platinum recognition. Beginning July 1, 2027, it will also be mandatory for Gold Class® renewals. Technicians eager to get ahead can start enrolling in early 2026 when the course officially launches.
Skills Validation and Industry Standards
The new course is part of I-CAR's ongoing mission to ensure that technicians are adequately prepared for today's sophisticated structural repairs. It validates their skill set in real-world scenarios, contributing to safer vehicles on the road. Each certification obtained through this program will remain valid for a duration of three years, per I-CAR’s established standards for welding certifications.
Pilot Programs and Customer Feedback
I-CAR has already conducted pilot sessions for the Mixed Attachment Methods course and gathered valuable feedback from technicians and repair facilities. This input has been instrumental in shaping the course to ensure it meets the practical needs of those working within the industry.
