Nissen Chooses Shopify to Revamp Its Core E-Commerce Platform

Nissen Adopts Shopify for Core E-Commerce Platform Transformation

In a significant move to modernize its e-commerce operations, Nissen, a leading Japanese catalog and online retailer, has officially announced the adoption of Shopify’s enterprise e-commerce platform. This shift marks a pivotal moment for the retailer as it seeks to enhance its online shopping experience and streamline its operational capabilities.

About Nissen

Nissen, headquartered in Kyoto, has built a robust customer base across Japan, offering a diverse range of products that include women's fashion, innerwear, home interiors, and lifestyle goods. By utilizing both catalog sales and online shopping platforms, Nissen has established itself as one of the country's prominent retail operations. The transition to Shopify's enterprise solution is expected to allow for a more flexible and scalable commerce environment through their main e-commerce site, Nissen Online.

Initial Plans and Changes in Strategy

Initially, Nissen planned to completely redesign its e-commerce platform using a completely custom-built system. However, after evaluating the risks, costs, and operational burdens associated with such a strategy, they opted for a more efficient approach. Starting in November 2025, Nissen will commence a rigorous evaluation process (Fit & Gap) and has decided to adopt Shopify's enterprise platform as the foundational tool for supporting long-term scalability and ongoing innovation.

Embracing Hybrid Commerce Models

One of the key drivers behind Nissen’s decision to switch to Shopify is their need to adapt to Japan’s unique business practices and consumer behaviors. This includes integrating the company's hybrid sales model, which combines e-commerce, catalog, and call center services. Such a model remains critical for catalog retailers in Japan, making Nissen’s transition pivotal in the current market landscape.

Furthermore, Nissen plans to implement various features that address extensive business requirements, including subscription services, proprietary credit card solutions, deferred payment options, and intricate shipping configurations. This enhancement will support Nissen’s vast product lineup while enabling a more integrated and agile e-commerce operation.
