What is Nishijin Fabric?

Nishijin-ori is a high-end textile that originates from the Nishijin district in Kyoto. The craft of Nishijin weaving has been cultivated since the Heian period, flourishing along with Japan's court culture. The name "Nishijin" comes from its revival around 1477 when artisans began weaving in the area surrounding the base of the western troops during the civil wars. In 1976, Nishijin fabric was designated as a traditional craft by the Japanese government and is renowned alongside other major textile production areas such as Kiryu and Hakata.

This intricate fabric is created by densely weaving pre-dyed threads, resulting in a luxurious texture that reflects light beautifully and reveals multi-dimensional patterns depending on the angle.
