KOMICS JAPAN 2026: A Cross-Cultural Collaboration of K-Webtoons and Japanese Content
From July 22 to 24, 2026, the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) organized the much-anticipated KOMICS JAPAN 2026 and the World Webtoon Festival Prologue in Tokyo, Japan. This event served as a vital intersection for the Korean webtoon industry to connect with Japan's thriving content market, aiming to create a platform for business collaboration and exchange.
The KOMICS JAPAN initiative is part of KOCCA's global business support program for comic and webtoon Intellectual Properties (IPs). The program helps outstanding Korean webtoon and manga IPs expand globally into various sectors, including publishing, film, gaming, and licensing. In total, 15 Korean companies participated, engaging in meetings with 70 Japanese buyers representing publishing houses, platforms, animation, gaming, and licensing sectors, leading to an impressive 375 successful business matches, amounting to around $14.82 million in transactions.
As the event unfolded, it became evident that opportunities extended beyond the publishing field, touching on animation, gaming, and licensing, showcasing the vast potential for Korean webtoon IPs in the international market. Several Korean firms secured contracts with Japanese companies for animation production, publishing, and platform distribution, pointing to concrete business successes.
Strengthening Global Networks in the Webtoon Industry
On the first day of the event, the 2026 World Webtoon Festival Prologue convened approximately 100 industry professionals from Japanese webtoon platforms, production companies, broadcasting stations, and animation studios. Together, they exchanged views on the latest trends in the webtoon industry and explored avenues for global collaboration.
Insight sessions focused on circulation and business expansion strategies within the Japanese webtoon market, as well as collaborative business models based on Japan-Korea co-productions. The attendees also previewed the upcoming World Webtoon Festival and World Webtoon Awards scheduled for December of this year, emphasizing opportunities for further participation and collaboration with major Japanese webtoon platforms and content enterprises. Networking activities during the event served to further solidify the framework for international collaboration.
Expanding Global Outreach and International Exchanges
Through these two significant events, KOCCA aims to support the entry of Korean manga and webtoon companies into the Japanese market and yield tangible business outcomes. By fostering relationships with key industry players in Japan, the foundation for international collaboration becomes even more robust.
Looking ahead, KOCCA plans to continue developing business support and networking programs in major overseas markets. By enhancing the global competitiveness of Korean manga and webtoon IPs, they actively seek to broaden opportunities for international cooperation through these popular mediums.
