Exploring Sustainable Trade on Earth Day with STANDAGE's Global Initiatives

Celebrating Earth Day: A Focus on Sustainable Trade

April 22 marks Earth Day, a global event dedicated to environmental protection and raising awareness about pressing ecological issues. In recent years, there has been a notable surge in interest and demand for sustainable products across international markets. Companies like STANDAGE, headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, are leading the way by providing comprehensive support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Japan, greatly enhancing their global outreach through their service, "Omakase Trade."

STANDAGE is committed to promoting environmentally-friendly products crafted by Japanese SMEs. This initiative is particularly relevant in light of the increasing global emphasis on sustainability. As we align our efforts with Earth Day, STANDAGE will showcase recent case studies in the realm of "sustainable trade," offering insights on how to expand overseas markets while contributing to a sustainable future.

What is Earth Day?

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated worldwide on April 22, aimed at fostering awareness of environmental conservation. It serves as a catalyst for individuals and businesses to adopt practices that reduce their environmental footprint. The growing significance of Earth Day is a clear reflection of the urgent challenges the planet faces, such as climate change and resource depletion.

Why Focus on Sustainable Trade?

Sustainable trade is a modern approach defined by the idea that global exchange can lead to a better world. By prioritizing products that consider environmental protection and social issues, companies can deliver value across borders. As topics like decarbonization, resource circularity, and social inclusion gain importance, the demand for corresponding products is steadily increasing. Within the framework of the "Omakase Trade" export support service, STANDAGE assists around 300 businesses in trading sustainably and responsibly.

Case Studies of Sustainable Trade Supported by STANDAGE

1. Green Design & Consulting's Emergency Food Supplies

In collaboration with Green Design & Consulting, STANDAGE is addressing food waste in Japan by redistributing emergency food supplies, which often face disposal after their shelf life. In January 2023, they provided samples to a food bank in Nigeria, confirming a significant need within the country’s food crisis context. This initiative not only aims to reduce domestic food waste but also to tackle food scarcity in regions like Nigeria suffering from overpopulation and scarce resources.

2. Okamoto's Wood Stoves: Meeting European Standards

The rising energy costs in Europe, primarily due to geopolitical tensions, have surged the demand for heating solutions like wood stoves. Okamoto, a renowned foundry established over 450 years ago in Gifu Prefecture, has developed the "AGNI" series of wood stoves, which meet European environmental standards, including the essential CE mark. Since their introduction, sales exceeding ¥10 million have been documented, particularly in Italy, with increasing inquiries from other European nations.

3. EiShin's Emission-Reducing Sprays

In South Asia, where air quality has dramatically declined due to vehicle emissions, EiShin's eco-spray has garnered attention for its potential to reduce harmful pollutants. As vehicles—especially diesel cars—rise in number, particularly in Kathmandu, Nepal, strategies combining distributor collaboration and potential government partnerships are being explored to tackle the alarming pollution levels, far above WHO guidelines.

STANDAGE’s Vision for Sustainable Trade

According to STANDAGE's Director of Trade Strategy, Fumiki Hamada, the focus on sustainability is not merely a passing trend but a future cornerstone of international trade. With new regulations such as the Ecodesign Regulation set to launch in the EU by mid-2024, the landscape for sustainable trading opportunities will expand significantly. STANDAGE aims to foster long-lasting trade relationships by promoting products that resonate with the principles of sustainability, thus creating new avenues for business.

Future Outlook

As global environmental and social issues grow more complex, the essence of trade lies in bridging the gap between ambitions and reality. STANDAGE is dedicated to expanding sustainable trade efforts, ensuring that quality products from Japan can reach global markets while advocating for the equitable access every nation deserves. By continuing to innovate in the sustainable trade sector, STANDAGE strives to realize a world where all countries have equal access to goods and opportunities, enhancing cooperation and mutual growth across borders.

About STANDAGE

Founded in March 2017, STANDAGE's vision is to create a world where access to goods and capital is equitable, regardless of location. Utilizing blockchain and stablecoin technology, they aim to facilitate an efficient exchange system for products and payments. With a focus on emerging markets, particularly in Africa, STANDAGE has established a footprint in Nigeria to support African trade operations. Beyond trade facilitation, their systems aim to digitalize entire trade operations, encompassing processes from logistics to order management, all while helping domestic players navigate export challenges effectively.
