Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial Launches Second Phase
The Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial has officially kicked off its much-anticipated second phase, showcasing nine freshly unveiled installations spread across iconic locations in the emirate. Running until April 30, 2025, the Biennial presents a dynamic exploration of art, culture, and community, featuring site-specific works by over 70 artists from Abu Dhabi and around the world. This includes 40 new commissions that have been thoughtfully placed throughout both downtown Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, reflecting a diverse artistic expression.
The second phase's launch follows an extraordinary debut in November, exhibiting pieces from notable artists including Anga Art Collective, Arquitectura Expandida, Ayesha Hadhir, and Tarik Kiswanson. Alongside this, Atelier Aziz Al Qatami will continue to evolve its installation at the Abu Dhabi Bus Terminal, adding to the event's vibrancy.
Further enriching the exhibition, new works by Hussein Sharif, Emily Jacir, and Rami Kashou in collaboration with Emirati artisans will be unveiled, enhancing the experience across the exhibition's eight curated routes. These routes can be conveniently navigated on foot or by car, ensuring accessibility for all art enthusiasts eager to explore.
This phase not only offers a visual feast but also fosters community engagement through a comprehensive public program at various Biennial sites. Visitors can participate in guided tours, screenings, and live performances, creating a lively atmosphere where art meets everyday life. One of the standout events will feature a performance by Mobile Akademie Berlin, further enhancing engagement through creative interactions.
Reem Fadda, the Director of Culture Programming at DCT Abu Dhabi, emphasizes the significance of the Biennial in shaping Abu Dhabi's cultural landscape. She states, "The artworks unveiled in this second phase present a broad array of perspectives on the definition of 'public' through our unique cultural lens. Together, these installations contemplate the intricate relationships between the environment, community, urban life, and the essence of identity that shape public spaces in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain."
