In a recent report published by Greenhouse, a leader in the hiring platform space, it was revealed that 48% of American workers are currently engaged in job searches, despite facing an array of significant challenges. The annual 2024 State of Job Hunting report uncovers a landscape riddled with issues like ghosting, discriminatory practices, and the overwhelming competition shaped by artificial intelligence (AI).
The Current Job Market's Challenges
The survey, which gathered responses from 2,500 workers across the US, UK, and Germany, underscores an anxious atmosphere among job seekers. A staggering 79% of these individuals report feelings of increased anxiety associated with the hiring process, indicating the market is not only challenging but also emotionally taxing.
One of the primary issues identified is the prevalence of ghosting—a phenomenon where candidates simply do not receive follow-up communication post-application or interview. The report discloses that 61% of job seekers have experienced ghosting after an interview, up by 9% since April 2024. Furthermore, nearly one out of ten candidates who received a job offer reported being ghosted by the company after the fact.
