UCB Myasthenia Gravis Scholarship Applications Now Open for 2027
UCB, a leading global biopharmaceutical company, has officially opened applications for the 2027 UCB U.S. Myasthenia Gravis Scholarship™. This initiative is dedicated to supporting individuals affected by myasthenia gravis (MG)—including patients, caregivers, and their family members—who are pursuing higher education. As part of this year’s program, UCB will award 15 scholarships, aiming to further enable educational and career aspirations for those impacted by MG. The application deadline is set for January 31, 2027.
Kimberly Moran, PhD, MBA, the Senior Vice President and Head of U.S. Rare Diseases at UCB, expressed the company’s ongoing commitment to the MG community, stating, “For three years, the UCB U.S. Myasthenia Gravis Scholarship has celebrated the resilience, determination, and aspirations of people impacted by MG. We are proud to continue supporting the educational goals of patients and their caregivers as they pursue their dreams in the face of challenges.”
The UCB Myasthenia Gravis Scholarship not only caters to individuals aiming for undergraduate or graduate degrees but also supports those seeking specialized certifications and career advancement opportunities. This program has already made a significant impact, enabling recipients to realize diverse educational and professional goals.
A Success Story: Joleen Rockhill
One notable example of the scholarship's positive impact is Joleen Rockhill, a 2025 scholarship recipient from Clearwater, Florida. Joleen, who is a dedicated caregiver for her mother living with MG, recently earned her doctorate in nursing practice from Galen College of Nursing. Reflecting on her journey, Joleen stated, “As I near the end of this academic journey, I want to thank UCB for the support and financial assistance. I honestly don't know if I would have completed my doctoral degree without it.” Her accomplishments exemplify how the scholarship not only facilitates educational advancement but also strengthens community advocacy and engagement.
Currently, Joleen is utilizing her education and personal experience to enhance care for those living with MG. She is actively developing continuing education courses aimed at first responders and nurses, focusing on recognizing MG exacerbations and managing oxygen-related considerations for MG patients. Additionally, she is creating a high-fidelity simulation experience designed to empower patients and caregivers in emergency scenarios, helping them gain confidence in managing acute health situations.
A Broader Vision for the Future
Ms. Rockhill envisions this initiative evolving from a single event to a broader educational platform, expanding access to necessary training for families affected by MG and other rare diseases. “When my mother was first diagnosed, an experience like this would have meant so much to me. I hope to create opportunities for patients and caregivers to navigate urgent scenarios safely,” she remarked. Such educational endeavors aim to provide crucial insights, reducing fear and enhancing preparedness in unpredictable situations, ultimately making a lasting difference in caregivers' and patients' lives.
