Inaugural "Hare Arai Aiten 2026" Exhibition
The International Heritage Crafts Association, based in Minato-ku, Tokyo, is thrilled to announce the upcoming exhibition titled "Hare Arai Aiten 2026". This event will showcase the incredible work of eleven skilled women artisans, a notable occurrence set to take place at the Hyakunen Takumi Gallery in Minami-Azabu from March 6 to March 11, 2026. As part of a celebration of gratitude for 30 years of dedication to traditional crafts, this exhibition marks a significant moment in the recognition of women's contributions to the craft industry.
Since its inception in 1995, the exhibition has traveled across various locations such as Tokyo, Kyoto, and Tsuwano, but this will be its first-time ever hosted at the Hyakunen Takumi Gallery. This gallery has been meticulously designed as a platform to elevate the value of Japanese traditional crafts and disseminate this cultural heritage on an international scale. The event is expected to provide a wonderful opportunity for the featured artisans to showcase their work in a venue that embodies innovation along with tradition.
Significance of the Exhibition at Hyakunen Takumi Gallery
The Hyakunen Takumi Gallery is not just any gallery; it serves as a pioneering center for promoting Japan's traditional crafts in contemporary settings while also reaching out to the international audience. Hosting the exhibition in this venue offers multiple advantages:
- - Strengthening communication around the activities of women artisans
- - Reasserting the contemporary relevance of traditional techniques
- - Enhancing outreach capabilities to both domestic and global markets
This event represents a pivotal chapter in the 30-year journey of women artisans, as they set forth onto a new stage that bridges past practices with future possibilities.
Background of the Event
Currently, the number of practitioners involved in traditional crafts across Japan stands at 3,324, with women representing only 602 of that number, accounting for a mere 18.1%. The Women Artisan Association was established to encourage collaboration, information sharing, skills transfer, and mentorship among female artisans. This exhibition aims to elevate the status of women artisans and promote the growth of the traditional crafts industry, continuing its legacy for three decades.
In 2026, this exhibition will be conducted with the strong support of three organizations: the International Heritage Crafts Association, Wakurashi Club, and Marumimi Corporation, occurring simultaneously in both Tokyo and Fukuoka.
