Xi'an Boosts Industrial Momentum through Air Silk Road Initiative

From April 14 to 16, 2026, Xi'an hosted Routes Asia 2026, the leading aviation and route development event in the Asia-Pacific region, under the theme "Meeting in Xi'an for a Shared Future." The event brought together stakeholders from around the world, featuring 92 airlines, 128 airport authorities, and 32 governmental and tourism organizations from 52 countries. This influential gathering demonstrated how Xi'an, the ancient capital of China, is leveraging its aerospace hub to stimulate industrial growth and enhance connectivity.

During the opening ceremony, significant contracts were signed between the New Airport City of the Xixian New Area and several international cargo airlines including CMA CGM Air Cargo, CAMEX Airlines, Georgian Airways, and Geosky Airlines. These agreements will introduce five new international cargo routes, significantly expanding Xi'an’s reach in the global market.

Xi'an Xianyang International Airport currently operates 62 passenger routes and has established strong connections with several cities across Central Asia. In 2025, the airport served over 48 million passengers, including nearly 2 million international travelers, and handled 335,000 tons of cargo. With a maximum capacity of 61 movements per hour, these figures underpin Xi'an's role as a pivotal transportation hub.

As the city strives to build a dominant aerospace industry, it has focused on key areas such as rocket propulsion and satellite manufacturing. With nearly 4,000 aerospace companies, Xi'an boasts the largest concentration of aerospace businesses in China. Collectively, these firms create an extensive ecosystem that includes rocket engines, satellite production, telemetry, and various applications of data technology, thereby solidifying Xi'an's position in the commercial aerospace industry.

In alignment with its XV Five-Year Plan, Xi'an aims to transform into a significant innovation center for industrial technology, promoting distinctive growth in civil aviation, low-altitude economy, commercial aerospace, integrated circuits, electric vehicles, and renewable energy sectors. The city is determined to create innovative and globally competitive products while nurturing an ecosystem that supports large-scale aircraft production.

To bolster this initiative, Xi'an recently announced a three-year action plan to enhance support capacities for large aircraft, with a target revenue of 150 billion yuan (about $22 billion) by 2027. This effort aims to develop a globally competitive large aircraft cluster, essential for Xi'an's ambitious growth targets.

In addition to aerospace, Xi'an has fostered a thriving electronic information ecosystem. By the end of 2025, the semiconductor and photonics sector included 233 larger enterprises, which together represented 15% of the city's total industrial output, making it a critical pillar of Xi'an's economy.

This multi-faceted approach not only illustrates Xi'an's revitalization but also highlights its determination to become a global leader in several high-tech industries. By capitalizing on international partnerships and innovative strategies, Xi'an is set on a path toward sustainable growth that continues to link China more closely with the world through its Air Silk Road initiative.
