National Archives of Japan's Spring Exhibition: Edo Period Publishing Culture
The National Archives of Japan, located in Chiyoda, Tokyo, is hosting a special spring exhibition titled "Books Open Peace: Publishing Culture of the Edo Period" from March 20 to May 11, 2024. This exhibition aims to provide an insight into the rich publishing culture that thrived during the Edo period (1603-1868), illustrating how literature and printed materials influenced society back then.
A Special Display of the Original Japanese Constitution
As part of this exhibition, from April 25 to May 6, visitors will have a unique opportunity to view the original document of the Japanese Constitution, coinciding with Constitution Memorial Day on May 3. Although the permanent exhibition normally showcases replicas, this is a rare chance to experience the actual historical document. The constitution was promulgated on November 3, 1946, by the cabinet of Prime Minister Shigeru Yoshida, and took effect on May 3, 1947. It enshrines fundamental principles such as national sovereignty, respect for human rights, and the renunciation of war.
