Gathering for Healing: Illinois Hosts International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day

On November 21, 2026, thousands of individuals who have experienced the painful loss of a loved one to suicide will come together across Illinois and worldwide for the International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. This event aims to create a safe and supportive environment for participants to connect with others who understand the intricacies of their grief, fostering pathways to healing and hope.

The event is organized by the Illinois Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). Angela Cummings, the Executive Director of AFSP Illinois, emphasized the importance of these gatherings. In her words, “Survivor Day reminds us that grief after suicide is uniquely challenging, yet healing becomes possible when we come together with others who understand.” This is ever more vital as the holiday season approaches, a time fraught with heightened emotions for many loss survivors.

International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day, established in 1999 through the efforts of the late U.S. Senator Harry Reid, occurs annually on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. It acknowledges the profound challenges faced by those grieving a loss to suicide, particularly during a season that traditionally emphasizes family and togetherness.

This year, AFSP Illinois plans to host a series of both in-person and virtual events throughout the state, all offered free of charge to anyone who has lost a loved one to suicide—be it a family member, friend, or colleague. Each event will feature opportunities for reflection, connection, and support, helping participants find community amid adversity.

Schedule of Events:

Participants can join various gatherings across Illinois, including:
  • - Saturday, November 14
11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. – Stinson Memorial Library Auditorium, Anna.
  • - Tuesday, November 17
6 p.m. – 8 p.m. (CST) – Virtual event for LGBTQ+ communities.
  • - Friday, November 20
1 p.m. – 4 p.m. (CT) – Lovell Federal Health Care Center, North Chicago.
  • - Saturday, November 21
Events running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with locations including Belleville, Joliet, Crystal Lake, Downers Grove, and Chicago—where a meal will also be shared.
  • - Sunday, November 22
Virtual events focusing on healing through different cultural lenses, including a Jewish perspective on suicide loss and a Spanish-language event.

The emphasis of these gatherings is not only on remembrance but also on shared engagement with others facing similar struggles. Survivors are encouraged to come together in silence and conversation, sharing their unique stories while also gaining insights into coping mechanisms and support options.

AFSP's mission emphasizes the importance of suicide prevention through research, education, and advocacy. According to national statistics, approximately 90% of individuals who die by suicide were living with a diagnosable mental health condition, highlighting the crucial need for awareness and support systems within communities.

The Illinois chapter of AFSP, through its network of dedicated volunteers, is committed to increasing awareness about mental health issues and providing educational programs designed to facilitate emotional healing and personal resilience.

In conjunction with ongoing efforts, AFSP plans a merger with The Jed Foundation (JED), forming a more significant entity aimed at suicide prevention across all ages and enhancing mental health support. As these organizations strengthen their missions, the emphasis on community support and effective mental health strategies remains paramount.
