People of Twin Cities and Jimmy Lai: Honorees of Kettering Democracy Prize 2026
Celebrating the Spirit of Democracy: The Kettering Democracy Prize 2026
In an inspiring announcement today, the Charles F. Kettering Foundation revealed the recipients of the prestigious 2026 Kettering Democracy Prize: the determined citizens of the Twin Cities and Hong Kong's political prisoner and renowned advocate for free speech, Jimmy Lai. Each recipient will be honored with a $100,000 award and the prized medal in a ceremony scheduled for November in Washington, D.C.
This recognition is given to individuals and groups whose extraordinary courage and dedication to inclusive democracy serve as a beacon for others, encouraging them to engage in their own democratic journey.
Honoring the People of the Twin Cities
The citizens of the Twin Cities, recognized for their valor in the face of adversity, have demonstrated the integral power of community organization and civic responsibility. In late 2025, during the Trump administration's controversial Operation Metro Surge, federal immigration forces descended upon Minneapolis, St. Paul and the surrounding areas as part of a targeted anti-immigrant campaign. In response to this infringement upon their community, residents rallied together, forming a substantial nonviolent movement that focused on mutual aid and accountability.
Despite facing challenges such as frigid winter temperatures and an environment of intimidation and violence, including tragic incidents such as the fatal shootings of community members, the people's resilience shone brightly. They documented ICE and CBP activities and provided essential support to vulnerable individuals, ultimately helping to diminish the visibility of federal operations within their neighborhoods. Their unwavering commitment to defending their community has created a powerful model for other locales combatting injustices.
The Courageous Voice of Jimmy Lai
At 78 years old, Jimmy Lai has become a symbol of the fight for freedom of speech and press within Hong Kong. As the founding figure of the now-defunct newspaper Apple Daily, Lai represented a stronghold for journalism and democracy in a region that is increasingly stifled by authoritarian rule. Following the implementation of China’s National Security Law in 2020, Lai faced severe repercussions: his company was raided, its assets frozen, and he was imprisoned for his resistance against oppressive governance.
Most recently, in February 2026, Lai was sentenced to an additional two decades behind bars, reinforcing his status as a political prisoner. Despite his circumstances, Lai's actions continue to inspire advocates for human rights across the globe. Increasingly, international voices call for his release, highlighting the ongoing struggle of those fighting for liberty.
Remarks from the Kettering Foundation
Sharon L. Davies, President and CEO of the Kettering Foundation, emphasized the significance of this year’s honorees, stating, "This year's Kettering Democracy Prize recipients remind us that thriving democracies rely on both courageous individuals and communities. For years, Jimmy Lai has exemplified what it means to fearlessly defend free expression, often facing personal sacrifice. The actions of the people of the Twin Cities serve as a striking reminder that democracy requires participation from those willing to take a stand against injustice."
The awardees this year follow in the footsteps of the 2025 Kettering Democracy Prize recipients, which included Alexei Navalny and Judith Browne Dianis, who are known for their remarkable contributions to governance and social justice.
The Charles F. Kettering Foundation, a nonpartisan nonprofit based in Dayton, Ohio, is dedicated to fostering inclusive democracies worldwide by promoting citizen engagement, enhancing accountability, and standing against authoritarian practices. As these honorees are celebrated, the Foundation’s mission to amplify democratic ideals continues to resonate across borders, inspiring universal efforts for justice and freedom.
