A Toast to Italy: Bloody Massimo Cocktail
In a delightful fusion of tradition and innovation, the delightful cocktail known as the Bloody Mary has been reimagined as the
Bloody Massimo. This new version of the iconic drink comes from the project titled
Red Gold Tomatoes from Europe, aimed at showcasing the excellence of Italian organic canned tomatoes in the Netherlands.
The
Red Gold Tomatoes from Europe initiative is orchestrated by ANICAV, the Italian Association of the Canned Vegetable Industry, and is co-financed by the European Union. Its mission? To stimulate the export and consumption of top-quality Italian tomatoes. As part of this project, the Bloody Massimo, crafted by the renowned chef
Massimo Riccioli of Trattoria La Rosetta in Rome, highlights the rich flavors of these organic tomatoes by giving the classic cocktail a vibrant Italian flair.
The Evolution of the Bloody Mary
Historically, the Bloody Mary was conceived in the early 1900s. According to legend, bartender
Fernand Petiot, while working at the esteemed
Harry's Bar in Paris, created the original cocktail inspired by the tastes frequented by American expatriates like
Ernest Hemingway. Initially a simple mix of vodka, tomato juice, and an assortment of spices, it was later refined in New York at the
St. Regis Hotel. Little did Petiot know, his creation would become a staple on cocktail menus worldwide.
In 1939, the Bloody Mary gained significant popularity, thanks to
Lucius Beebe, who promoted it in his column for the New York Herald Tribune. Petiot himself claimed to have perfected his recipe in 1934, meticulously measuring
6 cl of vodka and
6 cl of tomato juice, enhanced with Worcestershire sauce, horseradish sauce (later switched to Tabasco), salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, a squeeze of lemon, and crushed ice. The cocktail's name is shrouded in mystery, theorized by some to honor the famed Hollywood actress
Mary Pickford, while others suggest it pays tribute to the infamous English queen
Mary I, known as Bloody Mary for her ruthless tactics in restoring Catholicism during her reign.
