Global Student Entrepreneurs Gear Up for USD's Fowler Challenge in 2026

USD's Fowler Global Social Innovation Challenge 2026

On May 2, 2026, the University of San Diego (USD) will proudly present the global finals of the 2026 Fowler Global Social Innovation Challenge (GSIC). This event gathers bright young student entrepreneurs from 15 different countries, all prepared to unveil their innovative business proposals aimed at tackling some of the most pressing issues facing our world today.

The competition will witness over 40 dynamic student-led teams who successfully navigated through earlier preliminary rounds to reach this significant final stage. At the heart of the event, six outstanding finalists will have the opportunity to present their sustainable business solutions during a tightly scheduled one-hour showcase. Each team is allocated four minutes to pitch their concepts, all in pursuit of a prize pool that includes an impressive $100,000 in non-dilutive seed funding, along with various professional services that can help promote their ventures. More than sixteen teams can expect to leave the event with funding that will support and propel their entrepreneurial journeys forward.

This challenge embodies USD's unwavering commitment to nurturing innovators dedicated to serving humanity. Each finalist is focused on developing a venture that aligns with at least one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, tackling real social or environmental challenges that require immediate attention.

Among the competitors are two standout teams from USD itself:
  • - Ciao Bella, led by Sage Dobby, addresses the staggering waste generated by hair ties, with 30 million discarded daily, resulting in around 130,000 pounds of waste. The solution presented is the world’s first hair tie constructed from pineapple fiber, a valuable byproduct of agricultural harvesting that would generally be incinerated.
  • - Oink, founded by Zevin Attisha and Andre F. Suaid, captures the investment desires of Gen Z, with a staggering 90% eager to invest but over half failing to take that crucial first step. Oink effortlessly rounds up everyday purchases, investing the spare change into a cryptocurrency-backed portfolio.

Dr. James Antony, the university's provost and vice president for academic affairs, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, "The Fowler Global Social Innovation Challenge is an inspiring event where bold imagination meets steadfast resolve. I look forward to observing these social innovators pitch market-driven solutions that confront complexities in today’s fast-paced world. We are profoundly grateful to Ron and Alexis Fowler; their visionary support lays the groundwork for these changemakers to convert deep concerns into meaningful impacts."

Additionally, this event marks a significant milestone for the Fowler GSIC, which has been recognized as a World Design Capital 2024 Legacy Program during the San Diego-Tijuana World Design Capital year, showcasing its significant role in advancing human-centered innovation across the region and beyond.

Since its inception in 2011, initially limited to USD students, the Fowler GSIC has evolved into a prominent global pitch competition as of 2018, connecting over 3,000 students from more than 25 countries. Remarkably, the challenge has channeled over $1 million to catalyze innovative global ventures.
