New Executive Director Leads Massachusetts Nonprofit to Support Homeless Students' Education

New Executive Director for School on Wheels of Massachusetts



On March 5, 2025, School on Wheels of Massachusetts (SOWMA) unveiled its new Executive Director, Athena Giannaros. This nonprofit organization has a long-standing commitment to providing educational assistance and resources to homeless and underserved students throughout the Commonwealth. With over a decade of service to the organization in various capacities, including Board Chair, Giannaros brings a wealth of experience and a passion for educational equity that enhances SOWMA's mission.

Athena Giannaros, a resident of Hingham, Massachusetts, has dedicated her professional life to improving educational opportunities for those in need. Her expertise in nonprofit governance, strategic planning, and partnership development makes her an ideal leader for driving SOWMA's mission forward. In her new role, she will manage the organization’s daily operations and spearhead initiatives aimed at expanding educational programs and fostering relationships within the community. This is especially critical as SOWMA aims to ensure that every homeless student in Massachusetts gains access to quality education and the opportunities necessary for their success.

Giannaros's journey with SOWMA began in her hometown of Brockton, where she first volunteered in various capacities. Over the years, she has been instrumental in scaling the organization’s tutoring, mentoring, and customized backpack programs. These initiatives have grown from modest beginnings to significantly impactful interventions that now support thousands of students across the state.

Throughout her tenure, Giannaros has taken on various volunteer roles, including tutoring children at family shelters and mentoring at-risk youth. She possesses a Bachelor's degree in International Relations from Boston College and is fluent in Greek. Her well-rounded background contributes to her unique understanding of the barriers faced by homeless and underserved children in the educational system, allowing her to advocate effectively for their needs.
