Romancing Saga Project Surpasses Expectations: New Manhole Covers Debuting in Saga Prefecture

Romancing Saga's New Project Surpasses Funding Expectations

The introduction of the "Min Saga Project" has achieved remarkable success, surpassing its crowdfunding goal with an impressive total of 7.52 million yen, representing over 500% of its initial target. This collaborative endeavor between Saga Prefecture and Square Enix, marking the 12th year of their partnership, aims to create visually stunning manhole covers celebrating characters from the beloved Saga video game series. The crowdfunding initiative ran from April 1 to May 31, 2026, garnering significant support from fans nationwide.

The project initially aimed to raise 1.5 million yen to produce one manhole cover, but within just 15 hours, this goal was achieved. The subsequent stretch goal of 5 million yen for a second manhole cover was also met on May 25, thanks to the overwhelming support of 216 contributors. This collaboration will see the construction and installation of two new manhole covers, increasing the total count in Saga Prefecture to 34, following the introduction of 32 existing manhole designs that began in 2020.

Character Selection and Voting

As part of the crowdfunding process, fans were invited to vote for their preferred characters to be featured on the new manhole designs. The top two characters chosen were the 'Female Emperor' from Romancing SaGa 2, who will be placed at the east side of Saga Prefectural Office, and 'Ellen' from Romancing SaGa 3, who will be located near the Sunrise Exit of Saga Station. The installation of the 'Female Emperor' is scheduled for October 12, 2026, while the timeline for 'Ellen's' installation is still being finalized.

The RPG series Saga, which debuted in 1989, has captivated audiences with its engaging storytelling and character depth. The collaborative nature of this project reinforces the commitment of both Saga Prefecture and Square Enix to promote the local culture while celebrating the gaming community.

The new manhole covers will be manufactured by Hinode Waterworks in Miyaki Town, Saga. Utilizing advanced Japanese casting techniques, the company will transform fans’ ideas into high-quality, personalized designs.
