Investing in Infrastructure: North Carolina Railroad Company Boosts Scotland County's Rail Project

North Carolina Railroad Company's Investment in Rail Infrastructure

The North Carolina Railroad Company (NCRR) has announced a significant investment of up to $600,000 aimed at improving essential rail infrastructure in Scotland County. This funding is part of a larger initiative supporting Great Southern Wood-NC, Inc., which is set to build a new manufacturing facility in the area. The lumber company plans to inject approximately $40 million into the project, generating over 40 full-time employment opportunities for local residents.

The NCRR's financial support will primarily assist in the design and construction of on-site rail infrastructure at Laurinburg-Maxton Airport. This strategic development is expected to facilitate a minimum of 421 railcar shipments annually by 2030, streamlining logistics for the new lumber treatment facility.

Founded in Alabama in 1970, Great Southern Wood is known as a leader in producing pressure-treated pine and various other building materials. The Laurinburg facility will mark the company's 17th treating plant, extending its reach across 28 states and the District of Columbia. The company’s commitment to sustainability and the utilization of rail transport are expected to reduce transportation costs significantly, thereby enhancing supply chain efficiency.

Carl Warren, the president and CEO of NCRR, emphasized the importance of infrastructure in fostering business success. He stated, "Rail-served businesses like Great Southern Wood-NC understand the benefits of lower transportation costs, greater supply chain efficiency, and expanded market access. The track to sustained success is built on infrastructure."

Moreover, the NCRR emphasizes that the funding for these projects does not rely on taxpayer dollars. Instead, it draws from private revenue, allowing the railroad company to remain financially sustainable while supporting critical infrastructure projects that attract new employers, expand existing industries, and ensure North Carolina's competitiveness in the market. Since the launch of its NCRR Invests program in 2016, the company has allocated over $18 million toward rail-related enhancements, contributing to the creation of more than 12,200 jobs statewide.

This project is not an isolated endeavor; it involves collaboration with multiple stakeholders, including the Office of Governor Josh Stein, the North Carolina Department of Commerce, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, the North Carolina General Assembly, and various local organizations. The extensive partnerships illustrate a unified approach to economic development in the region.

The anticipated presence of Great Southern Wood-NC in Scotland County will not only boost the local economy through job creation but also enhance the logistical capabilities of businesses in the area. As the company gears up for operations, the focus will be on maintaining high standards in production while prioritizing the integration of sustainable practices within its operations.

Given the essential role of rail transport in promoting industrial growth and job creation, the NCRR’s investment signals a robust commitment to the development of North Carolina's infrastructure. As the project moves forward, it will be closely watched as a promising model for future investments in rail and infrastructure, showcasing the benefits they bring to communities and economies alike.
