Blanc de Chine Exhibition Unites Eastern and Western Ceramics in Spain
The Blanc de Chine Exhibition: Bridging Cultures Through Porcelain
On November 11, 2025, the quaint town of Talavera de la Reina, known for its rich ceramic traditions, hosted the grand opening of the 'Blanc de Chine: Dehua Porcelain' exhibition. This remarkable event marks a significant collaboration between two renowned ceramic centers, one in China and the other in Spain, aiming to share the exquisite art of white porcelain with a broader audience.
A Legacy of Craftsmanship
Nestled in Fujian province, Dehua is celebrated as a birthplace of Chinese ceramic culture. Wu Zhipu, the head of Dehua County, emphasized the essence of this heritage during his address at the exhibition. He stated, "The craftsmanship has been passed down from master to apprentice across generations. This century-old dedication defines Dehua's place on the world porcelain map."
The deep-rooted spirit of continuity has created a flourishing talent pool, with over 6,000 professional ceramic artists currently residing in Dehua. One standout figure is the renowned artist Lian Deli, known for his remarkable work in traditional porcelain craftsmanship. His piece, titled 'Myth', exemplifies Dehua's mastery in creating ultra-thin porcelain measuring just 0.2 millimeters in thickness.
Innovations in Traditional Artistry
Lian Deli remarked on how advancements in technology have opened new avenues for traditional craftsmanship. "With digital tools and precise control over firing, we can create more delicate, lighter, and transparent forms," he noted. He further added that technologies such as AI and 3D modeling are not threats but invaluable aids. However, the final touches still rely on decades of manual labor and expert knowledge.
The Dehua porcelain industry is thriving, with more than 4,500 ceramic enterprises contributing to an industrial revenue of 60.2 billion yuan as of October this year. Spanning over 190 countries and regions, the export of Dehua porcelain has made a significant global impact, and the county has successfully registered the 'Blanc de Chine' trademark in Spain, aiming to utilize the Spanish market as a gateway to Europe, Africa, and Latin America.
Strengthening International Ties
During the exhibition, Dehua County and Talavera de la Reina formalized a relationship to enhance collaboration in the fields of culture, commerce, and ceramic skill. Wu Zhipu expressed a desire for establishing overseas promotion centers for Blanc de Chine while inviting Spanish partners to visit China. "We aim for more people globally to discover the charm of Dehua porcelain," he stated passionately.
Looking ahead, Dehua seeks to further integrate its ceramic heritage with cultural tourism, promising visitors engaging experiences that allow for direct interaction with the legacy of white porcelain. This initiative aims to foster appreciation for the art form and commemorate its historical significance.
The 'Blanc de Chine: Dehua Porcelain' exhibition stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of traditional craftsmanship merged with contemporary innovations, paving the way for international cultural exchange and appreciation of one of China's most iconic art forms.
