Dr. Eric Weiss Takes Leadership Role at Mount Sinai Medical Center's Cardiovascular Surgery

Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Florida, has proudly announced the appointment of Dr. Eric S. Weiss, MD, MPH, as the President of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (CVTS). Known nationally for his expertise in heart surgery, Dr. Weiss will also serve alongside Dr. Steve Xydas as Co-Director of Valve Surgery, a role that he commenced on June 2, 2025.

Dr. Weiss's arrival marks a significant advancement for Mount Sinai's renowned cardiovascular program, particularly in the fields of minimally invasive mitral valve and aortic procedures. As indicated in a recent report by the Agency for Health Care Administration, Mount Sinai performed over 9,000 heart-related surgeries in 2024 alone, more than any other hospital in the region. This impressive figure highlights the center's strong commitment to exceptional cardiovascular care.

"We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Weiss's commitment to innovation, patient outcomes, and surgical excellence to Mount Sinai," said Gino R. Santorio, President and CEO of Mount Sinai Medical Center. The hospital is confident that with Dr. Weiss's leadership, the cardiovascular program will continue to set the standard for medical care not only in South Florida but also beyond.

Prior to his tenure at Mount Sinai, Dr. Weiss headed the Structural Heart Program and Aortic Center at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee. There, he led his team to earn a prestigious three-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Over the course of his career, Dr. Weiss has successfully performed more than 6,000 cardiac surgeries and has gained widespread recognition as one of the top valve surgeons in the United States. His innovative approaches to minimally invasive mitral and aortic valve surgery, aortic dissection repair, and transcatheter therapies have proven effective in reducing operative time, boosting recovery, and enhancing patient outcomes.

Dr. Weiss is a board-certified surgeon, specializing in non-invasive treatments for complex cardiovascular conditions. He earned both his medical degree and Master of Public Health from the prestigious Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he completed his general surgery residency. His training was filled with accolades, including the John L. Cameron Award for Technical Excellence in Surgery and the Gershon Efron Award for Outstanding Clinical Research. He further honed his cardiothoracic skills at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia and the University of Pennsylvania.

Beyond his extensive clinical experience, Dr. Weiss is a prolific contributor to medical literature, having published over 70 peer-reviewed academic articles and delivered more than 80 presentations at medical conferences. His commitment to education and research will bolster Mount Sinai's mission to lead in quality healthcare delivery.
