Advancing a Circular Economy: Fujipco and Cosmo Corporation's Eco Store Collaboration
Fujipco, a prominent manufacturer of food containers in Japan, and Cosmo Corporation, which operates numerous fresh food supermarkets, have recently strengthened their partnership through a collaborative declaration aimed at enhancing recycling efforts and encouraging the use of eco-friendly products. This initiative focuses on the concept of horizontal recycling, transforming used food trays collected at stores into new trays that can be utilized again in the same stores. By doing so, both companies are taking significant steps toward a sustainable circular economy.
Expanding the Use of Eco-Friendly Products
One of the key objectives of this collaboration is to broaden the use of recycled and environmentally friendly items, including “Eco Trays,” “Eco APET,” and “Eco OPET.” These products will be implemented more proactively, contributing to resource circulation and a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. With the aggressive promotion of these eco-innovative containers, both companies aim to decrease their environmental footprint drastically.
Increasing Collection Points for Used Food Trays
Currently, out of 15 Cosmo Corporation stores, only two are actively involved in the collection of used food trays. However, plans are underway to expand this collection initiative to additional locations. This expansion seeks to engage the local community in resource recovery efforts, thereby amplifying the recycling network. Remarkably, this eco-store collaboration marks a pioneering step in Kyoto Prefecture, establishing it as the first supermarket-centric initiative of its kind.
Achievements So Far and Future Goals
Thanks to the committed usage of eco products, Fujipco and Cosmo Corporation have managed to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 75 tons for the fiscal year ending in May 2025. Looking ahead, they aim to further enhance their strategies to achieve a target reduction of 79 tons by May 2026, representing a goal of 105.3% compared to the previous period. This promising target demonstrates the efficacy of their collaborative efforts and their commitment to environmental stewardship.
Looking Forward
With their eyes set on becoming eco-leaders in their communities, Fujipco and Cosmo Corporation are dedicated to minimizing environmental impacts while effectively utilizing recycled resources. They intend to engage local residents by providing informative resources at stores and hosting enjoyable events that highlight environmental initiatives, all aimed at fostering sustainable, circular economies for future generations. Through education and community involvement, both companies strive to elevate awareness and momentum around eco-friendly actions.
