Dallas County Students Show Steady Academic Gains



The latest STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) results for the 2025–26 school year highlight an encouraging trend in academic achievement among Dallas County students in grades 3–8. Released by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), these results illustrate the positive strides students are making, particularly in their foundational reading and math skills.

Continuous Growth in Core Subjects



Across Dallas County, students have demonstrated a consistent increase in performance, with reading scores climbing by 1 percentage point and math scores by 2 percentage points from the previous year. This growth not only matches the statewide reading gains but represents a more significant advancement in mathematics. Notably, Black students in Dallas County excelled in math as well, achieving a 3 percentage point increase over the statewide average of 2 points.

Specific Areas of Improvement



Fourth-grade math notably showed substantial progress, with a remarkable 5 percentage point increase in students reaching grade-level standards. This gain is above the statewide metric, suggesting a strong drive among educational institutions to equip students with essential math skills that will pave the way for future academic endeavors.

The significance of early achievement in mathematics cannot be overstated. Mastery of basic math concepts during elementary years creates pathways to advanced courses such as Algebra I, which is correlated with higher rates of postsecondary enrollment and greater lifetime earnings.

Reading proficiency also saw positive trends, particularly in grades 6–8, where a 2 percentage point increase in the number of students meeting standards was recorded. This is particularly noteworthy given that many of these students faced learning disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Robust reading skills in the early grades allow students to tackle more complex content across various subjects as they progress in their education. Research has consistently shown that proficiency in third-grade reading is linked to critical long-term outcomes, including high school graduation and access to college-level courses.

However, challenges remain evident, especially regarding students who experienced setbacks in reading during their formative years. Historical data indicates that only 29% of Dallas County students who did not meet third-grade reading standards eventually achieved success in their English I EOC exam in 2023.

Aiming for Future Improvements



Looking ahead, the launch of a new assessment system under House Bill 8 will replace STAAR with the Student Success Tool (SST), to be implemented in the 2027-28 school year. This new system is designed to provide real-time assessments of student growth at multiple points throughout the academic year, allowing for quicker adjustments in instructional methods and targeted support.

The recent STAAR results signify an upward trend in academic development not just in Dallas County but across Texas, demonstrating that when educational institutions focus on effective instructional strategies, positive outcomes can be achieved. Of the county's 15 largest school systems, 11 reported improved performance compared to the prior year.
