La Caisse Invests in India's Leading Telecom Tower Platform
In a significant move for the telecommunications sector in India, La Caisse, a prominent global investment group, has joined forces with Brookfield to invest approximately INR 121 billion (about CAD 1.76 billion) in Altius Telecom Infrastructure Trust, the largest independent telecom tower platform in the country. This strategic investment, underlining the collaboration between the two financial entities, grants La Caisse a 24% stake in Altius, which operates over 258,000 telecom towers nationwide.
The completion of this transaction not only reinforces Brookfield's position as the largest investor in Altius but also establishes a powerful partnership among key institutional investors, including GIC and British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI). With India recognized as the world's second-largest telecommunications market, the increasing demand for mobile data services and the rollout of 5G technology necessitate robust digital infrastructure.
Emmanuel Jaclot, La Caisse's Executive Vice-President and Head of Infrastructure and Sustainability, emphasized the urgency for infrastructure development, stating, "As India's economy continues to expand, there is a growing reliance on mobile data, and consequently, the infrastructure must evolve swiftly to meet this demand. Our experience in global telecom tower investments positions us to contribute meaningfully to Altius' growth."
Altius plays a pivotal role in supporting mobile operators as they strive to deliver enhanced 4G and 5G services across India. With the market witnessing an exponential increase in data consumption, the pressure on telecommunications providers to enhance their infrastructure is mounting. Altius's extensive network is well-positioned to support the burgeoning needs of consumers and businesses alike.
Sam Pollock, CEO of Brookfield's Infrastructure group, conveyed confidence in Altius' capacity to meet India’s mobile connectivity challenges, remarking, "Altius has developed a comprehensive, nationwide framework that stands ready to address the country's growing demands for advanced telecom infrastructure. La Caisse's partnership bolsters this platform's potential and signals continued faith in the viability of the business." Pollock also highlighted the commitment to further supporting Altius through long-term strategies and operational expertise.
La Caisse is renowned for its substantial investments over the past 60 years, with a mission that balances both generating optimal returns for its depositors and fostering economic development in Québec. With roughly CAD 552 billion in net assets as of June 30, 2026, La Caisse's influence extends across various sectors, including private equity and real estate, as well as infrastructure investments crucial for stimulating economic progress.
