On July 9, 2025, the Japan Management Association Consulting (JMAC) announced the start of its third comprehensive survey titled 'Sustainability Management Challenge Survey 2023.' This initiative follows previous surveys conducted in 2022 and 2023, as part of JMAC's collaborative efforts with its group companies to explore the realities of sustainability management in corporate settings.
The survey aims to uncover critical management issues confronting Japanese companies as they strive to advance their sustainability practices. In recent years, sustainability has emerged as a pivotal aspect of corporate management, prompting JMAC and its subsidiaries—including the Japan Management Association Management Center (JMAM), the Japan Management Association Research Institute (JMAR), and JMA Systems (JMAS)—to work together on this research initiative.
The target participants for this survey are sustainability officers from leading companies nationwide, and it will be conducted online from July 9 to August 22, 2025. Incentives for participating include a special purchase opportunity for the SDGs card game 'Sustainable Management' (SUSUMANE®), designed to help businesses enhance their economic performance while pursuing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This survey builds upon insights gained from the second survey, which highlighted vital elements driving successful sustainability management in enterprises. Data from 4,853 domestic firms were collected via a web-based questionnaire from November 6 to December 1, 2023, attaining an effective response rate of 3.2% with 138 valid responses received. The responses were distributed across various sectors, including 58 manufacturing and 79 non-manufacturing companies.
Key takeaways included the necessity for companies to foster an environment conducive to sustainability. Organizations that actively engaged with external stakeholders and involved their employees in sustainability initiatives were better positioned to implement successful strategies. Respondents emphasized five critical actions for sustainability leaders, which include fostering active external relationships, fueling enthusiasm from top management, engaging employees, deeply understanding their unique sustainability identity, and establishing an ambitious vision for progress.
Through the lens of the previous two surveys, JMAC recommends several concepts and characteristics that are essential for promoting robust sustainability efforts. These insights encapsulated four main concepts and ten actionable recommendations, positioning companies closer to achieving their sustainability objectives.
In summary, JMAC’s efforts underscore the importance of maintaining momentum in sustainability management practices and advocate for continued research to track progress in overcoming current challenges.
