PG&E's Historic $43 Million Investment in Community Microgrids



Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is making a significant stride towards enhancing energy resilience in Northern California by allocating up to $43 million for the development of community microgrids. This initiative is part of the Microgrid Incentive Program (MIP) and aims to strengthen power support for communities that are particularly vulnerable to outages.

Overview of the Program


The MIP will support the construction of nine new microgrids across PG&E's Northern and Central California service areas. This funding aims to empower community-driven projects that can provide alternative energy sources during outages, thereby ensuring that essential services remain operational. Examples of such facilities include hospitals, emergency services, and schools, all of which play a critical role during emergencies.

Starting April 3, 2025, PG&E will open a new application window for interested parties to submit their project ideas, further expanding opportunities for community engagement and development in clean energy solutions. The deadline for proposal submissions is set for May 30, 2025.

Importance of Microgrid Development


Microgrids are defined as interconnected groups of customers and distributed energy resources (DER) that can operate independently from the main electricity grid. They enable communities to retain energized supplies during outages, greatly benefiting those who may be the most affected, such as elderly residents and individuals with disabilities.

Over the past few months, PG&E garnered interest from around 50 inquiries from local and tribal governments as well as community organizations regarding the MIP. Following a comprehensive evaluation process, nine projects were selected based on criteria that included customer benefit, resilience advantages, and environmental impact. Each of these projects is eligible for up to $6 million in funding aimed at facilitating the installation of renewable energy technologies.

Community-Centric Focus


PG&E's decision to fund these microgrids reflects their commitment to community engagement and support. Among the first wave of project awards, four of the nine projects will cater specifically to tribal communities. This initiative promotes energy equality, ensuring that even the most remote and underserved areas have access to stable power sources.

The selected microgrid projects encompass a blend of clean energy resources, including solar panels, battery storage systems, and even small hydroelectric plants, all aimed at creating a more sustainable power network.
