Sungrow Launches PowerTitan 2.0 in Finland
Sungrow, a leading name in photovoltaic inverters and energy storage systems, has proudly announced its collaboration with Renewable Power Capital (RPC) to deliver the cutting-edge PowerTitan 2.0 energy storage system for the Kalanti project located in Uusikaupunki, Finland. This innovative deployment signals the first use of the PowerTitan 2.0 BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) in the Nordic country and is set to begin construction in March 2025.
This advanced system will significantly enhance grid stability and optimize the integration of renewable resources in the region. At a recent Energy Storage Summit in London, the agreement was formally signed, marking a pivotal moment for energy storage advancements in Finland.
Features of PowerTitan 2.0
The PowerTitan 2.0 is a fully liquid-cooled energy storage solution, meticulously engineered for optimum efficiency and longevity. Given its intelligent cooling technology, the system ensures precise temperature control across all battery cells, thus enhancing thermal management, minimizing operational risks, and maximizing overall performance. Notably, the system boasts a round-trip efficiency (RTE) of 90%, which significantly improves both charging and discharging efficiencies, and extends the operational lifespan of the batteries. Sungrow plans to deploy 20 units, each with a capacity of 5 MWh, housed in compact 20-foot containers that integrate battery cells and power conversion systems (PCS).
Additionally, Sungrow will provide comprehensive operations and maintenance services under a 15-year contract with RPC, ensuring reliability, efficiency, and peak performance throughout the lifespan of the project.
Industry Perspectives
Iker Labiano, the ESS manager at Sungrow Iberica, remarked, "This project is a critical step for energy storage in Finland, and we are honored to partner with RPC to deliver our latest liquid-cooled BESS technology to market. With PowerTitan 2.0, we not only provide a highly efficient and reliable storage solution but also strengthen our commitment to supporting energy transition through a safe, scalable, and intelligent BESS technology."
Sarwjit Sambhi, CEO of Renewable Power Capital, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, "Finland is a key market for us. The energy system truly requires efficient and well-managed storage to leverage its abundant wind resources. We are thrilled to partner with trusted organizations like Sungrow, with whom we have wonderful relationships. We look forward to ensuring vital infrastructure is developed for the Finnish energy system."
The Kalanti BESS will have a capacity to store energy for two hours, allowing it to provide essential network services such as frequency response and participate actively in energy wholesale trading. Sungrow's state-of-the-art technology will be instrumental in optimizing site efficiency, reducing maintenance costs, and seamlessly integrating with Finland's renewable energy infrastructure.
Resilience in Diverse Environments
Iñigo Cayetano, Senior ESS Product Manager at Sungrow Iberica, noted, "With a corrosion rating of C5, the PowerTitan 2.0 can be deployed in various challenging environments. The system has already been successfully implemented in various projects worldwide, including in Uzbekistan, the Philippines, and the UK, to name a few. It is efficient, proven, and safe, making it a reliable solution."
With over 19 years of experience in energy storage systems, Sungrow presents PowerTitan 2.0 as the latest technological innovation in the BESS sector, supporting rapid energy storage project development across Europe, where SP Global Commodity Insights expects over 140 GW to be installed between 2024 and 2030.
