The 137th Canton Fair Expands Opportunities for Fishing Equipment Manufacturers

In an era where niche hobbies are rapidly moving into the mainstream, traditional industries are experiencing swift and transformative changes. Fishing, once primarily associated with older generations' leisure activities, has evolved into a dynamic and technology-driven sector. This shift encourages manufacturers to move beyond conventional fishing circles and reach a wider consumer base. The China Import and Export Fair, more commonly known as the Canton Fair, has become an essential gateway for manufacturers aiming to enter new markets and attract global buyers.

Held from May 1 to 5, 2025, the 137th Canton Fair featured a dedicated section for "Sports, Travel, and Recreation Products," enabling buyers to discover a plethora of offerings beyond conventional fishing gear. The range included everything from basic fishing rods at various price points to advanced electronic floats and specialized equipment designed for emerging categories such as deep-sea fishing and ice fishing. The fair clearly conveyed that modern fishing is synonymous with precision, innovation, and a refined outdoor experience.

For instance, Taizhou Source One International Co., Ltd. showcased an impressive lineup of ice fishing products, including electric augers capable of drilling precise holes in extreme conditions within seconds. This innovation not only enhances efficiency but also boosts safety, making ice fishing more accessible for enthusiasts of all skill levels. Stella Wang, Sales Director at Source One, expressed, "Our ice fishing line is already popular in the United States, Canada, and Russia. Now, we are aiming to penetrate the Northern European market, and the Canton Fair serves as a platform for such opportunities."

Fujian Doofar Outdoor Sporting Goods Co., Ltd., a manufacturer specializing in yachts and water sports equipment, has also seized the rising trend of fishing. This year, they highlighted fishing kayaks, introducing two models at the fair: a durable rigid hull kayak and an inflatable pedal version. Both models feature simplified steering and seating systems, promising an effortless user experience. Daniel Shen, Sales Director, stated, "Fishing should be about enjoyment, not complexity. While our major markets are in the United States and Australia, the Canton Fair allows us to connect with a broader clientele and prominent buyers to help us penetrate new regions."

Additionally, Guangdong Boatman Electronics Co., Ltd., making its debut at the Canton Fair this year, traditionally catered to the European market and typically participated in specialized fishing exhibitions. With ambitions to expand into countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative, Boatman aims to leverage the fair to connect with distributors in emerging regions. Their standout products—a series of bait boats—showcases the success of the fair in spotlighting niche innovations. Even on the first day, these offerings attracted dozens of buyers and sparked interest for samples from clients based in Germany, Australia, and Mauritius.

As niche products gain traction around the globe, the Canton Fair has proven to be a powerful platform for manufacturers seeking to go beyond traditional boundaries. By connecting brands with a diverse array of international buyers, the fair facilitates the emergence of segments such as advanced fishing gear to find new customers, penetrate fresh markets, and adapt to the evolving global demand from consumers.
