Understanding Employee Preferences in Office Amenities: A New Survey Unveils Discrepancies

Employee Preferences in Office Amenities: Bridging the Gap

With employees gradually returning to the office, employers are making efforts to enhance their workspace offerings, introducing a variety of amenities designed to draw workers back. However, a recent survey conducted by MRI Software and CoreNet Global indicates that many of these added features may not align with what employees truly value.

The Survey Findings

The report, based on feedback from over 200 employees in the real estate sector worldwide, highlights significant discrepancies between the amenities organizations prioritize and those that employees find important. Conducted between June and July 2024, the survey asked respondents to rank 19 different workplace amenities.

The Key Highlights

1. Air Quality Matters: Topping the list of desired amenities is air quality, signaling a growing awareness of its role in maintaining employee wellbeing. Despite its importance, organizations ranked air quality second, focusing instead on accessibility.

2. Amenity-Rich Facilities: Employees ranked having a rich array of amenities as their fourth most desired feature, while it fell to tenth place in terms of what companies are currently offering. High-end amenities can serve as a competitive advantage for office spaces but may not be widely implemented.

3. Biophilia’s Role: The incorporation of natural elements, like plants and sunlight, came in tenth on the employee wish list but was prioritized as the fourth most actioned item by firms. This raises questions about whether organizations are focusing on the right aspects to promote creativity and reduce stress.

4. Innovation in Design: Other areas examined, like living labs and demountable designs, showcased an interesting trend. While innovation spaces for testing new design frameworks ranked 12th among desired features, they were rated even lower in terms of current implementation—a gap that could hinder workplace adaptability.

The Disconnect Between Employees and Employers

As highlighted by Carla Hinson, VP of North America Solutions at MRI Software, the findings point to a significant disconnect between what employees want and what employers are willing to implement.

"It's clear that organizations are trying hard to offer attractive amenities. However, these efforts might fall short if there's a misalignment between employee preferences and organizational focus."

With the rising trend of mandatory return-to-office policies, understanding these priorities is crucial for employers aiming to create a positive and productive work environment. Failing to do so could result in lower employee satisfaction and increased attrition rates.

Recommendations for Employers

1. Enhanced Engagement: Engage in regular discussions with employees to understand their preferences on workplace amenities, rather than making assumptions based on industry norms.
2. Holistic Approach: Consider a holistic approach to workspace design and wellbeing, taking into account a balance of physical, psychological, and social elements as highlighted in the survey.
3. Innovate and Adapt: Stay flexible in workplace design, incorporating feedback to create spaces that adapt to changing employee needs and preferences.

The Role of MRI Software

As an established player in real estate software solutions, MRI Software aims to transform how workspaces are designed and used. By providing insights into workplace dynamics, they enable companies to innovate and create environments that foster productivity and satisfaction.

In conclusion, bridging the gap between what employees desire and what employers provide is essential for cultivating a workplace that not only attracts employees back but keeps them engaged and productive. Paying close attention to amenity preferences is more than just good practice; it's a strategic move that can significantly enhance business performance.
