POWERCHINA Enhances Global Healthcare Infrastructure on World Health Day 2025
On April 7, 2025, Power Construction Corporation of China, commonly known as POWERCHINA, marked World Health Day 2025 by celebrating the completion and handover of several hospitals in Laos and Peru. This initiative underscores the company’s unwavering commitment to fostering a global health community through meaningful actions.
The theme for this year’s World Health Day, “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures,” emphasizes the urgency for governments and healthcare organizations to intensify efforts in ending preventable maternal and newborn deaths. POWERCHINA’s projects in Peru and Laos align perfectly with this goal by enhancing local healthcare systems. These initiatives span infrastructure development, the enhancement of medical resources, technology transfer, and talent training. All these contributions are geared towards not just immediate needs but long-term improvements in maternal and child health.
Contributions in Laos
POWERCHINA has been actively involved in Laos since 1996, employing its technical expertise to complete high-quality projects that significantly boost both the economy and national development. One of the highlights is the Luang Prabang Hospital, which has greatly improved healthcare access in northern Laos. This hospital is particularly notable as it is the first project funded by the Chinese government to be both constructed and handed over by POWERCHINA in Laos.
Construction commenced in September 2022 and concluded in July 2024. The facility comprises 5,918 square meters of new construction along with 8,308 square meters of renovations. Noteworthy features include specialized surgery and cardiovascular buildings, residential apartments for healthcare workers, and sewage treatment facilities. Dr. Phouvana, the hospital director, mentions how dedicated facilities for women and a barrier-free design enhance the healthcare experience, ensuring privacy and comfort for female patients.
Contributions in Peru
The Huancayo Libertad Hospital, nestled at an altitude of 3,259 meters, symbolizes POWERCHINA's commitment to Peru, being the third hospital handed over by the company and the largest modern healthcare facility in the region. Encompassing 13,000 square meters, this facility features a five-story main building complemented by four auxiliary structures, providing 42 beds and comprehensive medical services. Notably, it includes an operating room, maternity suite, outpatient and emergency care areas, as well as laboratories stocked with advanced medical equipment. Serving a population of 120,000, it has also created over 200 jobs in the medical field. Dr. José Chávez lauded the facility’s obstetric tools and neonatal intensive care capabilities.
Additionally, the San Ignacio Hospital, which serves as the only comprehensive hospital in northern Cajamarca, boasts a substantial area of 7,599 square meters and is equipped for 40 beds. With the capacity to serve 150,000 residents, the establishment plays a crucial role in elevating basic medical services and facilitating the urban healthcare system's advancement. Local citizen Juan Calderón emphasizes the hospital’s accessibility, greatly reducing the time patients previously had to spend traveling for care.
Broader Impact and Future Initiatives
In addition to the recently unveiled hospitals in Laos and Peru, POWERCHINA is underway with several projects in Angola, Equatorial Guinea, and Colombia. These establishments promise to enhance local healthcare systems, generate employment opportunities, and improve infrastructure. Their initiatives represent China's robust participation in global health governance and humanitarian efforts.
Through the provision of modern facilities, expansion of medical services, and improvements in inpatient and emergency care, POWERCHINA is strongly aligned with the World Health Organization's calls for global cooperation aimed at enhancing maternal and infant health. Their ongoing endeavors will continue to facilitate a more equitable global health landscape, nurturing hope and progress across communities worldwide.
