Historic Labor Agreement: Sysco Workers Celebrate First Regional Contract with Teamsters

Major Victory for Sysco Workers

In a landmark achievement, over 1,000 Sysco drivers and warehouse personnel in Northern California and Nevada have ratified their first regional collective bargaining agreement with Teamsters. This four-year contract introduces a remarkable 34% wage increase along with substantial enhancements in pension contributions, high-quality health care benefits, and vital protections against unsafe working conditions and the threats posed by automation.

According to Tom Erickson, Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division, this agreement sets a precedent for future negotiations between the Teamsters and Sysco. "This is a landmark agreement and a model for how the Teamsters will bargain with Sysco moving forward," stated Erickson. He credited the negotiations’ success to the readiness of the workers to strike, which pushed the company back to the bargaining table. "Our members made it clear the clock was ticking and were fully prepared to strike if Sysco failed to deliver. That readiness paid off and delivered a major victory."

The new contract binds members from Teamsters Locals 137, 533, and 853. Workers credit their organizational strength for the success of these negotiations. As Joe Silva, a warehouse worker and steward from Local 853, remarked, "Our new contract is the strongest we have ever negotiated. Every one of us was prepared to do whatever it took to achieve this deal. It proves what happens when workers stand together and are prepared to back up their demands with action."

Sysco stands as one of the biggest food service distributors in the United States. In their 2024 fiscal year, the company reported impressive net profits of $1.95 billion, reflecting a year-over-year increase exceeding 10%. Workers at Sysco found themselves demanding a fair share of the company's success, a movement that turned into a tangible victory with this newly ratified contract.

Ryan Sullivan, a driver at Sysco and steward of Local 533, emphasized the significance of the contract by stating, "This contract will have a life-changing impact on our families, and it sends a message to every Sysco facility across the country that when Teamsters stand united, workers win."

Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters is a prominent labor union that represents approximately 1.3 million hardworking individuals across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. With a long-standing commitment to workers' rights and welfare, the Teamsters continue to advocate for fair labor practices in various industries.

In conclusion, the successful ratification of this contract marks a crucial milestone for Sysco employees. It not only boosts their wages and benefits significantly, but also strengthens the foundation of labor negotiations in the food distribution industry. As these workers celebrate their collective victory, the Teamsters union reiterates its pledge to protect workers’ rights and promote equitable workplace standards.
