Transforming Michigan's Public Transit with Propane Autogas
In a groundbreaking move toward sustainable public transportation, transit agencies across Michigan are pivoting to propane autogas as a cleaner, cost-effective fuel alternative. This initiative has resulted in the deployment of nearly 500 propane-fueled buses among more than 15 agencies, marking a significant step toward reducing operational costs and environmental impact.
Todd Mouw, executive vice president for ROUSH CleanTech, emphasizes the transformative role of propane autogas in this transition. "Our state's transit agencies are showing remarkable confidence in propane autogas as a reliable and environmentally friendly fuel option for their fleets," he stated, highlighting the importance of this shift in ensuring a greener and more cost-efficient future for public transport.
The advancements in Michigan's transit systems have been endorsed by the Livonia-based ROUSH CleanTech, which provides the engineered propane systems fueling these buses. The ROUSH CleanTech Ford E-450 cutaway chassis notably completed the Federal Transit Administration’s New Model Bus Testing Program, allowing transit operators to qualify for federal financial assistance.
Among the transit agencies leading this charge is the Flint Mass Transportation Authority (MTA), which operates over 150 propane-powered buses. Edgar H. Benning, CEO of MTA, notes the economic advantages of using propane, stating that it helps to mitigate exposure to fluctuating imported fuel prices.
Adding to the momentum, Daniel Whitehouse, vice president for Metro Detroit’s Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART), shares insights on the performance of these propane buses. With over 60 vehicles in operation, SMART has focused not only on the fuel savings but also on contributing to a cleaner environment by utilizing propane autogas.
One of the key strengths of propane is its classification as a clean energy source by the Environmental Protection Agency, bolstering the transition toward domestic fuel sources. In the words of Steve Schipper, Chief Operating Officer of The Rapid in Grand Rapids, “Propane is not only suitable for our climate but also ensures the continued support of American jobs by reducing dependency on foreign oil.” Currently, The Rapid operates 47 propane buses in its fleet.
These propane-powered buses present a significant reduction in daily operational expenses. On average, the cost of propane autogas is about 40% less than gasoline and 50% less than diesel, translating into major savings for transit agencies. Moreover, propane buses are associated with low maintenance costs and enhanced performance due to their reliable drivability, long range, and optimal functionality even in cold weather conditions, with successful starts in temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
Whitney Ehresman, transportation director for Allegan County Transportation, emphasizes the comfort and functionality of propane buses during winter months, pointing out that the quicker warm-up time of these vehicles is essential in regions experiencing severe cold. Allegan County's adoption of propane buses has already yielded significant financial benefits, saving over $150,000 in fuel costs within the first eight months of operation.
In total, more than 7,000 propane transit vehicles are actively being utilized across the United States, showcasing a growing trend toward more sustainable transit solutions.
