Transforming Inventory Management: NTT DATA Simplifies Operations with RFID System

Introduction of RFID Inventory Management at NTT DATA

NTT DATA Customer Service Corporation's China branch has made a significant leap forward in logistics management by implementing an RFID inventory management system known as "Tagemon." This innovative technology allows the organization to manage approximately 7,000 items across 400 categories of internal equipment, significantly reducing the time required for inventory tasks from ten times a year, lasting four hours each time, to just once a year, taking only 2.5 hours. This transformation represents an astounding reduction of 82.5% in inventory time, along with improved accuracy and a notable decrease in labor costs.

Background Behind the Implementation

The China branch of NTT DATA Customer Service faced substantial challenges due to reliance on manual labor for inventory management. Human error and productivity are critical concerns in such a manual environment. Consequently, the need arose for a solution focused on automating management processes through RFID technology. The introduction of Tagemon was intended to address these issues effectively.

Adapting Tagemon to NTT DATA's Operations

To accommodate the specific operational needs of NTT DATA customer service, Tagemon has been adapted with a flexible workflow. The initial operating processes included:

1. Storage of RFID Tags: Storing tags in binders on various shelves.
2. Retrieval of Items and Tags: Users picked up necessary items along with any shelf tags, providing flexibility in inventory management.
3. Post-Use Tag Management: Used tags were designated into a separate basket for further processing.
4. Data Management: Users would then bulk-register items that had been shipped or used, streamlining the data entry process.

At the start of the implementation, a challenge was encountered where tags stored together lowered reading precision; however, through collaborative efforts involving NTT DATA and the Tagemon team, a solution was developed. The strategy included separating the tags and storing each in a binder to enhance reading accuracy.

Benefits of the RFID System

The shift to Tagemon delivered outstanding benefits:
  • - Reduction of Inventory Frequency: Transitioning from ten inventories a year to just one.
  • - Automation and Efficiency: The automation enabled by Tagemon resulted in faster inventory checks.
  • - Reduced Labor Burden: The process now takes significantly less time and human resources.
  • - Improved Precision: Enhanced data accuracy reduces mistakes that were commonplace in the manual process.

Visual Representation of the Benefits

Post-implementation photographs reveal a dramatically improved inventory process. Tagemon effectively facilitates rapid inventory checks even for large quantities, while also ensuring seamless operation with mobile rack management.

Overview of Tagemon

Tagemon significantly reduces the time needed for inventory management, effectively replacing hours of labor with rapid, automated processing. RFID tags affixed to items are scanned en masse with a handheld reader, delivering immediate updates to an inventory ledger. Key features include:
  • - Efficient Bulk Scanning: Drastically minimizes the challenges associated with conducting inventory checks.
  • - Rapid Deployment: Equipped with easily adaptable software, businesses can implement Tagemon in record time.
  • - Environmental Sustainability: By going paperless, the operations contribute positively to environmental sustainability.

Additional Information on RFID Technologies

RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification, a technology allowing the scanning of multiple tags simultaneously using radio waves. This approach replaces the previous labor-intensive method of manual inventory operations.
