Sopra Steria Enhances Environmental Commitment Through Support of Green Tech Startups
Sopra Steria's Commitment to a Sustainable Future
Sopra Steria, one of the leading companies in the European technology landscape, is taking significant steps to strengthen its dedication to combating climate change. The firm recently announced investments aimed at two innovative startup projects designed to mitigate carbon dioxide through ocean alkalinization and to regenerate degraded arid soils through regenerative agriculture practices.
In an important initiative, Sopra Steria revealed on April 7, 2022, its plans to link a credit line of €1.1 billion to ambitious sustainability goals, targeting an 85% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per employee by the year 2040, in line with the Paris Agreement. This commitment, verified by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), includes a bonus malus mechanism within the company's loan contract to ensure accountability.
Thanks to achieving environmental targets set for 2022 and 2023, Sopra Steria established a special fund, exceeding €200,000, to finance innovative technological projects aimed at addressing climate change challenges. According to Axelle Lemaire, Executive Director in charge of Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility at Sopra Steria, "Utilizing this credit line reflects our commitment to ecological transition. It is not enough to reduce our own CO₂ emissions and to contribute to those of our clients. Solutions to the severe repercussions of climate change will emerge from this alliance of innovation, economic performance, and social impact, and we are proud to support these projects that explore new horizons for solutions."
Among the projects highlighted are initiatives by PRONOE, which works towards combating ocean acidification, and Sand To Green, which focuses on the regeneration of arid areas. These startups were carefully chosen by an internal expert committee and confirmed by Crédit Agricole CIB and Crédit Lyonnais in their roles as sustainability coordinators and sustainability officers.
In conclusion, Sopra Steria's proactive approach reflects a growing awareness within the tech industry regarding sustainability. Their efforts not only aim to curb emissions but also to drive innovation in green technologies, proving that big corporations can indeed play a pivotal role in the fight against climate change. As they take these progressive steps, Sopra Steria sets a benchmark for other firms to follow, underscoring the critical importance of environmental responsibility in today’s business models. By investing in these two promising startups, the company is not just looking towards a sustainable future, but also actively contributing to the creation of a better planet for future generations.
