Rwanda Celebrates Milestone in Smart Education and Launches DigiTruck Initiative
On October 3, 2025, Rwanda made significant strides in its educational landscape by completing the first phase of the Smart Education project and unveiling the DigiTruck initiative. This collaborative effort, spearheaded by Huawei and the Rwandan Ministry of Education, is a testament to the nation's commitment towards digital transformation in education and elevating the digital competencies of its population.
In recent years, Rwanda has established itself as a leader in leveraging technology for education. The Smart Education project has successfully connected 1,500 schools to high-speed internet, establishing two advanced data centers and laying the foundation for a specialized educational network. This network supports digital learning and teaching across the nation, aligning with Rwanda's vision for a competitive knowledge-based economy by 2050. As a result, nearly 1.5 million students now enjoy equal access to quality educational resources, bridging gaps between urban and rural education.
Joseph Nsengimana, Rwanda's Minister of Education, expressed the significance of this achievement, stating, "Today’s joint celebration is more than just a ceremonial event; it highlights Rwanda's unwavering commitment to technology-based inclusive education. These initiatives foster international collaboration, promote digital equality, and further sustainable national development."
The DigiTruck project represents another innovative solution to expand digital literacy among marginalized communities. This mobile classroom, powered by solar energy, is equipped with laptops, internet access, and digital learning tools. It aims to provide free tailored training in digital skills, especially targeting youth, girls, and out-of-school farmers. The convenience of being transportable allows DigiTruck to reach remote areas, where trained professionals offer instruction, even in locations lacking electricity and internet access.
"Initiatives like DigiTruck are more than just technology; they are gateways to opportunity, empowerment, and securing a future for Rwanda as a knowledge economy," added Erastea Rurangwa, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of ICT and Innovation.
According to plans for the second phase of the national transformation strategy, DigiTruck will impact all 30 districts in Rwanda, striving to train over 1 million citizens in digital skills within the next three years. Thus far, Huawei’s TECH4ALL initiative has successfully provided digital skills training to more than 17,000 individuals across seven countries, covering various essential skills like device usage, office software, online job applications, and coding.
In Kigali, a student can now share knowledge in real-time with peers from remote locations like Rusizi, showcasing the true impact of digital inclusion in breaking distances and barriers. This advocacy helps to empower students by providing them with the tools they need to dream bigger, removing obstacles to their education. Jin Jiqing, CEO of Huawei Technologies Rwanda, heralded this milestone, stating, "The DigiTruck project has become a beacon for opportunity and knowledge-sharing across Rwanda. Each trained student not only advances their future but also strengthens their community."
