Mitsukashifukumasu's Smoked Wild Yellowtail Wins Gold at Buyer’s Room 2025 Awards

Mitsukashifukumasu's Gold Prize Winning Smoked Wild Yellowtail

On October 17, 2025, it was officially announced that Mitsukashifukumasu, part of the Shari Town Commerce and Industry Association in Hokkaido, received the prestigious Gold Prize for its original “Smoked Wild Yellowtail” at the Buyer’s Room 2025 event held in Tokyo.

The Buyer’s Room initiative, operated by the National Association of Commercial and Industrial Organizations since its establishment in 1988, aims to promote regional products while supporting small and medium-sized businesses in expanding their market reach. This year's event took place on September 17, 2025, and featured a panel of approximately 40 judges evaluating 102 products submitted from all around Japan. The event has shifted focus since 2020 to provide more business matching opportunities for vendors and distributors, culminating in awards that enhance product value and visibility.

Among various prestigious accolades, Mitsukashifukumasu's Smoked Wild Yellowtail stood out with its unique flavor profile. This product is crafted using wild yellowtail sourced from the Shiretoko region of Hokkaido. It is meticulously prepared through an exclusive technique that incorporates salt and sweetness into the smoking process. The aromatic infusion of beechwood along with the rich notes of aged whiskey barrels enhances the fish's natural umami, resulting in a deep, satisfying taste that lingers on the palate. The fish is expertly sliced into bite-sized pieces to ensure immediate enjoyment; just thaw, open the packaging, and it becomes a perfect accompaniment for sake.

Other awarded products include:
  • - Silver Prize: Toyama Crab Dumpling and Golden Dashi Set by Sake and Snacks Wanon (Toyama Prefecture, Toyama City)
  • - Bronze Prize: Wooden Bear Monaka by Kuraya Confectionery (Hokkaido, Yakumo)

The Silver Prize-winning crab dumplings are made with fish paste mixed with snow crab, shiitake mushrooms, and mitsuba, providing a delightful variety that can be served either as part of a hot pot or deep-fried. Its accompanying clear golden dashi, prepared simply with kombu and salt, serves as a versatile base for many dishes.

Winning the Bronze Prize, the Wooden Bear Monaka features no added sugars or artificial sweeteners, and is gluten-free. It is filled with homemade caramelized honey walnut butter made from local ingredients, providing a unique taste experience.

Additionally, the event recognized 45 products with Special Jury Awards, showcasing innovative and high-quality items from various regions, demonstrating the remarkable culinary diversity and creativity found in Japan's food scene.

The Meaning Behind Buyer’s Room

The Buyer’s Room concept facilitates business connections between local producers and distributors, chefs, and retail partners, addressing the challenges small enterprises face in product development and market access. Through this initiative, companies from various regions have the chance to showcase their offerings without the burden of travel costs. This non-face-to-face approach allows for efficient engagement, enabling local businesses to connect directly with decision-makers in the culinary and retail fields.

Looking Ahead

As the commercial landscape continues to evolve, the Buyer’s Room initiative reflects a growing trend towards localized production and sustainable, high-quality food products. The next entry period for the Buyer’s Room 2025 will be from July 1 to July 31, 2025, with a confirmation of selected candidates by August 5, 2025. This showcases participants' dedication to innovation and their commitment to improving product quality to meet the changing demands of consumers.

Together, these products exemplify the essence of Japanese culinary arts and highlight the commitment of local businesses to deliver exceptional flavors that celebrate regional resources and craftsmanship. The accolades received at Buyer’s Room serve as a powerful testament to the continued evolution and recognition of fine products originating from the heart of Japan.
